I think it's a big mistake for the Big 12 to go to a nine-game conf. schedule. It sounded yesterday like some of the Big Ten coaches don't like the idea either.

I think everyone agrees that the extra conference game is not going to be fun. But really, whats the alternative? Not playing one team in the conference each year? To me, that is just dumb. Id rather just play everyone else.

I agree. Missing one team a year would not be a big deal. We miss 3 a year right now, so we'd still be improving quite a lot in that regard.

How is that 'just dumb'. We've missed 3 teams a year for the last 15 years. The big 10 hasnt played everybody either, nor has the SEC.

Is there a link on the Big Ten thing, I hadn't heard they were considering that. I don't understand why they wouldn't schedule similar to how we scheduled when we had 12.

When the hell is the 8 vs 9 conference games going to officially be settled? Seems it was relatively certain it would be 9 - but there has to be an official release soon - this impacts a lot of stuff.

Same for hoops, etc - can't wait forever.

Some of the head coaches were asked about the possibility, that's all. Several, including Tressel, were lukewarm at best.

    From the Columbus Dispatch:

Delany said the divisional alignment issue could be settled in as soon as 30 days.
He also came out in support of a nine-game conference schedule instead of the current eight-game setup.
"We have to do everything we can to make sure we play each other more, not less," he said.
That was not unanimously supported. Minutes earlier, Tressel said he believed a nine-game league schedule "wasn't a great idea" because an extra road game could derail a national championship-contending team and because of concern about the financial hit from losing an extra home game every other year.
"If you're assigned to five away games from the get-go, and you're in the midst of a home-and-home with somebody like we like to do, all of a sudden now you've got six away games, and that might be difficult for us to do our 36 sports," Tressel said.
"So I guess just Ohio State-wise, I'm not sure it's a great financial thing."

Its one thing to not play 3 teams a year, because clearly you couldn't have an 11 game conference season. But not playing 1 team just seems pointless. Its not THAT big of a deal to play one more tough game. Plus, without a conference championship game you get into stupid tiebreak rules like the big 10 currently has. To me, thats just dumb. Just add the next game and leave no doubt who the champion is.

Not to mention that 7 out of 9 years you are still playing both OU and Texas, which is what everyone is so upset about. Is it really that big of a benefity to drop Baylor or KU in favor of a MAC team?

Playing both OU and texas is not the problem. Losing a sure-win nonconference game is the problem.

Plus with our budget, we need all the non-conf. home dates - and gates - that we can.

Dan Beebe quotes from Big 12 Media Days:

"ABC/ESPN, has agreed to hold level our rights fees even without a championship game. In part that's going to be because we can provide them with nine football games for every school instead of eight, giving them a quality conference game per institution"

"I think the overwhelming feeling is now at least they're guaranteed a slate of games, nine conference games that are meaningful, because when you line up in the conference week after week, it's a pretty good challenge no matter who you're playing, and that may override some of the concerns about whether that game is going to be replaced by not having a good conference game."

Shouldn't that at least be partially offset by adding a, in theory, higher gate home conf. game every other year?
