Angry Iowa State v. Iowa football - Is the Series about to end?

I would love to see the Iowa State-Iowa football game continue. It is good for the state and always a compelling game.

Jon Miller at HawkeyeNation is speculating that, if Iowa goes to 9 conference games, it will be compelled to drop Iowa State, the reasoning being that Iowa always wants 7 home games in a 12 game schedule for revenue purposes (they have a big stadium), and in years when they have only 4 Big Ten home games, they need to be in a scheduling situation where they can schedule 3 home non-conference games (which does not work with Iowa State, since that series is home-and-home).

As much as I hate to admit it, he may be right. Is this game in jeopardy?

Miller has been tooting this horn for a few years now. ISU is going to be in this same predicament when we move to 9 conference games next year.

I am confident that this will get ironed out for both schools so that when you have 5 conference home games, you play the Iowa/Iowa state game on the road, and when you have 4 conference home games, you play the game at home.

I am going on record here (although it is a poor record).

I guarantee this series will continue.

    Next question.

Re: Iowa State v. Iowa football - Is the Series about to end?

I could work if ISU and Iowa are on opposite schedules for the 4 home conference games. The year you only have 4 conference games then you get the ISU/Iowa game. The opposite years you have 5 conference games along with your usual two patsies. The problem arises if either school wants to schedule other home and home series. Personally, I think we'll see at most us playing Iowa 2 out of every 4 years.

This. Nobody says you can't pick it back up in the future but I can't see how this game positively effects either team. Both teams would gain by dropping it. Only a portion of the fanbases want to continue to play.

End it. Let's play bowl games.

If Iowa does drop it, I will send a letter to Grassley requesting that Iowa has their not for profit status looked in to. (Assuming he is still around)

If we have to start playing Oklahoma and Texas every year.. we should just end it.

This, Big 12 as we know will not last forever, lets end it now and come back to it when expansion is through.

    Every third year?

I'm afraid that it just makes too much sense not to have the game each year.

However, it isn't an all-or-nothing matter. Rather than annually, it could be held every third year. Bragging rights for three years would ratchet the rivalry way up!
