    Your most embarrassing athletic failure...

The greatest achievement thread got me thinking about the other side as well. Show some humility and enjoy being relatively anonymous.

-I backpedaled to catch a pop up at third base and tripped on a 3" tall lip between the dirt and the grass outfield. Ball landed right next to me... Awful.

-In little league, I got caught too far off 2nd base on a line drive catch by the shortstop and wasn't able to tag up. Not so bad, until my little league coach came out into the middle of the field and started screaming at me. (In hindsight, might have been more embarrassing for him, but I still remember it).

I took a baseball to the nuts on a pop fly. There was a quarter in my pocket between the ball and the target and it left a circle bruise. It was not a great day.

Warming up for baseball games was not a good experience for me...

-One time, I was charging a "bunt" in warmups, caught one foot in the other foot's stirrup, and magnificently tripped.

-I also broke my nose in warmups on a bad hop from the coach. It was on a horrible, rocky field, and I suffered the consequences.

My senior year of high school we were playing DSM East in the substate finals and the first shot I took was an airballed three that had to have gone a good foot and a half past the rim.

Also, playing football our sophmore year against Dowling our head coach sent us out with the pep-talk of "Boys, I have never been inovled with a team who was 50 pointed in my life-- don't let today be the day". We got fifty-pointed about 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter.

Jogging for a routine fly ball and my cleat got caught on my opposite shoe's shoelace. Fell right on my face and my feet were stuck together for a couple seconds. Terrible.

All my attempts to play basketball in school. I'm 6'5" and easily confused with this (when wearing yellow):

Got walked in little league, let go of the bat too late, threw it over the fence and kit the coaches mother. Sweet.

Re: Your most embarrassing athletic failure...

Got another one... As a freshman, I ended up starting over a senior in baseball one year removed from our state championship. (Not a popular decision by the coach, though exciting for me). In any case, the embarrassing part was that I had the favor returned as a junior when my little brother ended up starting in front of me... Talk about a no-win situation.

Line coach (ex aTm center) was demonstrating the proper blocking technique and launched me about 15 feet in the air and fat on my ***....right in front of all the cheerleaders.....

Hilarious. I was lucky. I only wore the low stirrups, so there was nothing to get caught on. Later though we switched to the socks with the built-in stirrups... Now I know why.

Re: Your most embarrassing athletic failure...

besides my striking out 4 times in one intramural softball game that i posted in other thread i have a couple that stick out.

In college puked all over my arm while down in three point stance just before play started. Felt much better afterwards but guy across from me didn't enjoy getting puke on him during that play.

Missed a dunk in high school that came off the back of the rim and broke three of my fingers during a game. Two on one and one on the other.

In eighth grade missed a wide open layup, on the other teams hoop, so good thing I missed.

I'm sure there are more that I will remember.

Re: Your most embarrassing athletic failure...

My senior year, I was playing nose guard and the offensive guard just whifs his block when me and the tackle do a twist stunt. I'm totally unblocked, and bearing down on the QB for a sack, when all of a sudden, I catch the full back out of the corner of my eye. He lays out and just dives right into my knees. I get completely horizontal to the ground and completely miss the QB. I thought for a second that my leg was broken. During film the next week my coach probably rewound that play about 5 times just laughing his *** off.

The other thing that sucked was that on the field goal team, I was always the guy right next to the long snapper, despite being one of the smaller guys on the line. I was right up against the biggest guy from the other team nearly every time. To make matters worse, our coach insisted that we block for field goals by turning our upper bodies perpendicular to our feet and grabbing the guy next to you, so you were completely off balance. I let up 2 blocked kicks in a game and that was the end of me being on the field goal team (which I was just fine with), but damn if that wasn't embarassing.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.
