    Linebacker Group

As we all know our linebacking group is very young and does not have much experince. I am going to make a prediction though. I believe our linebackers, by the end of the season will be our strongest suit on defense. I'm putting them above our Dbacks too. We have two solid kids that we know of in Jake Knott and AJ Klien that like to knock the heads off of people. We have Taufoou, but i think Jeremiah George will take over that spot during mid season if he continues to shine in the weight room and on the field. He did say there is a chance that he could take a red shirt, but i dont see that happening. I think George has enough speed to play one of the outside linebacking spots also. The kid is just a freak athleticly. Mark it down, our linebacking group will be our strong suit by the end of the season. I also predict that Jake Knott willl lead our team in tackles.

Jeremiah George will red shirt unless an injury happens. He only weighs 200 pounds. Linebackers need to be no less than 220 to play, but if wants to play middle linebacker, he needs to at least be 235. MT is going to be the best linebacker on defense. The coaching staff is very high on this kid. He would have seen solid playing time last year if he didn't get in the coaches dog house.

A agree our LB's will be a strength this year... but personally since Knott and Klein have three years and Taufoo has two... I would rather see George and Mattison red shirt and bulk up a little more. LB could be a strength for the next five years.

    Re: Linebacker Group

Last I read, he was 205. I would say there is zero chance that George redshirts. I think he'll likely be the first LB off the bench by mid-season and will play a role similar to what Klein and Knott did last year...a lot of ST play and a bit of time at LB. The good, from all reports, is simply to good not to play.

    Re: Linebacker Group

George will play IMO. He will spell Knott or Klein on the outside. When Matt T. needs a break. George will come in and Klein will slide to the middle.

Everyone says to not be too concerned about the linebackers. Biggest concern is the DL. I think we will be serviceable there but not great.

I really don't think JG will be red shifting. He's already to good.

I would also expect to see the same scenario at LB. The 2 deeps at LB will be filled primarily by incoming freshmen. If you are in the 2 deep at LB, you will see the field both on special teams and base defense. The top 2 or 3 best freshman LB's will not redshirt. Next year could be a different story as there should be some depth returning.

How is he already too good? Explain that to me. He hasn't even seen the practice field yet. Him and Mattison will both red shirt. They do not weigh enough. Unless an injury happens, they will be redshirting.

The staff is as high on JG as they are on Shontrelle Johnson

If he puts on 30 pounds, he won't have a neck.

While that may be true that he redshirts, I dont think he NEEDS to be 235. Berryman played LB at an actual 216 his first year and was pretty good.

Berryman was DE. That guy was a 5 star talent. I have no idea how he went unnoticed. I would like to see a link to Berrymans weight, because he was huge. I have hard time believing he only weighed 215. I was thinking he weighed 230-240 coming out if high school.

Who's going to back up the starters if the freshmen all redshirt? There is no possibility whatsoever that all the freshmen LBs redshirt. None. We don't have the depth to even consider that as a possibility.

Nope. He was listed at 220 out of HS, but his playing weight at ISU his freshman year was about 216. Reggie Hayward was nearly the same story.

Mac said several times when Berryman was a sophomore that he played as a true freshman at 216 pounds. They listed him at 235-240 on the roster, but he didn't weight that much. He may have come in weighing more, but the rigors of a college fall camp took some weight off him.
