    Are crop duster pilots crazy?

Just curious.....we see one in Indianola all the time, and it looks like he's engaged in a dog fight with all the twists and turns and low flying, and on my way to Atlantic yesterday, one of them was dusting by the interstate, and came down sharply right across I-80 about 30 feet above a semi going by. Must take some loose screws to do that, but they sure look like they have fun at it.

I was near Atlantic last weekend and they had helicopters doing the same thing only they were about 10 ft above my car and hauling balls. Ive never seen a helicopter move quite like that.

Saw in the news that one went down in Jackson County yesterday after hitting power lines.

I agree. Those guys are nuts.

There have been two crop dusters crash in our area, one last year and one just a couple of weeks ago. Pilot walked away both times.

I would never do it but ya it takes a certain type of pilot to willingly repeatedly fly within feet of power lines and other obstructions close to the ground.

Re: Are crop duster pilots crazy?

Folks, the piloting skills required for crop dusting were usually passed along in informal flight sessions, (treated as more of an art form) than the sophisticated science that it was. Pilots were taught how to fly low, with their wheels almost touching the crops, as a method to reduce “chemical drift”—fertilizer or pesticides straying into the wrong areas. I personally have not Crop dusted, but I can totally relate with ground effect winds, and the invisible risks involved. Yes! those are some damn good aviators!

There are many BOLD crop duster pilots, but not many OLD crop duster pilots

Re: Are crop duster pilots crazy?

I have messed with the idea of trying this out. You need a commercial pilot's license and then there is an agricultural signoff.

I hear they are getting paid more and more because there are less of them around...

Re: Are crop duster pilots crazy?

How much can you get paid to do this?

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

Re: Are crop duster pilots crazy?

I think there were 2 cases of people on the ground getting dusted last week in Grundy county. In one case, a person got dusted, and then the ambulance crew got dusted while tending to them so the whole group had to be decontaminated before going into the hospital

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.
