Lickliter clearly Iowa's second choice for BB coach

There is an article in today's Register by Witosky stating that Iowa drew up a contract offer to Kevin Stallings to be signed the same day Lickliter was hired. The Stallings offer was for $300,000 more than what Lickliter received. DesMoinesRegister.com

It also has some interesting names that inquired or responded to inquiries from Iowa about the job, notably Lowery and Crean.

Wow, if true, that is information that you really wouldn't want to get out! Hahahaha

I still can't believe that Barta offered Lickliter $1.2m. Gary Barta may go down as one of the worst negotiators in college sports.

Iowa should be thankful Barta wasn't responsible for renegotiating Kirk's contract. They'd probably be paying Kirk $5m plus.

This is a complete non-story by Witosky. You mean Barta interviewed a lot of people and prepared documentation for them? Isn't that his job?

    I can't stand Witosky.

Agreed...he writes more about nothing better than anyone else.

Gotta try and sell papers even in the summer. From a sport point of view, there is just nothing to talk about right now so you need to dig up dirt.

I disagree, I'm much better at writing about nothing than Witosky. You should see my Teacher Ed. program essay. I talk in circles for 25 pages.

Another "great" story by Tom Witosky...that took him, what, 4 months to get that story? And I bet he doesn't go on one sportsradio show to defend his story just like he did with the D1-scheduling "scandal".

Even though it may delight some of you, what purpose does this story have? Everyone KNEW Lickliter wasn't their first choice.

Another great piece Tom...way to "break" the story.

Re: Lickliter clearly Iowa's second choice for BB coach

I'm really getting tired of the Rag. They report more and more nothing every year. They didn't report about the Drake tennis team going to the NCAA Tournament until it had already happened - even though they were one of the best teams in Bulldog history.

And any Iowa fan could have said that Stallings was a serious candidate - that was one of the very little pieces of information that did somehow get leaked out.

Wait a minute.... you mean to tell me that the Rag actually prints something that shines a bad light on UofI? Grab your ice skates, fellas, I think hell just froze over!

This is news? I'm not sure he was even as high as the 2nd choice.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I was thinking the same thing. I seem to remember a lot more names being thrown out before Lickliter came to the forefront.

I'm not sure McDermott was Pollard's first choice. I think he was after Jeter first , but had to pass because of the high buy out for his contract.
I think we ended up with the right guy, particularly after Jeter went from 23-9 in 2005-2006 to 9-22 last year.

    1. This board has always had a problem with "hawk love."
    2. Do folks honestly believe it is a newspaper's job to serve as PR arm for the college athletic teams? Witosky is one of the few staff members remaining at the DMR who still does journalism.
    3. This is an interesting story as it raises the question, Why did Stallings turn down the job? It's an incomplete story in the sense that Stallings wouldn't comment.

Oh give it up. It's just a fact that Witosky writes mostly about non-stories. Just because some of us don't follow the (insert Borg voice here) "we are to hate Iowa" programed response, doesn't make anyone hawk lovers.

And...Cyclone#1 is right - there is nothing new here.
