    Health Insurance

My fiance has to decide between the following options:
    1. She can go to only one doctor but only has to pay the $10 co-pay; no medical bills.
    2. She can go to any doctor but has to pay 10% of all medical bills plus the $10 co-pay.

Which one is the better choice for her?

Does she get to choose the one doctor?

    Re: Health Insurance

The first option, only one doctor, does not make sense to me; suppose, for example, your lady needed to see a specialist? If the first, one-doc option does not allow for that exception, she could be facing big problems.

She doesn't have the ability to go to a specialist with a referral on #1? Never heard of such a thing.

Surely she can get a referral to a specialist, I'm guessing the one doc thing would be for general care stuff.

If that's the case, I think I'm opting for #1. Pretty easy to get a referral and 10% of costs can add up fast for even minor issues.

    Re: Health Insurance

Do you know who the doctor is? I'd research what patients think of him. Otherwise, I'd gladly pay 10% of the bill to pick my doctor, but I don't go very often.

    Re: Health Insurance

OP: are you sure this is just one doctor ? Or is this for one service provider where you have to pick a Primary Care Physician (PCP). You can still go to different doctors but they have to be in the same network ? I know my old place offered this type of insurance too.

    Re: Health Insurance

Update: She picks one doctor and that's the only general care doctor she can go to. If something were discovered, like cancer, she then gets to pick the specialist but only gets to go to that one specialist. Her and I are both thinking option 1 but I wanted some opinions from CF.

    Re: Health Insurance

I'd get a crystal clear idea of what their policies are for second opinions - or being able to change your primary care physician if you are having misgivings.

My family has some recent issues along these lines. It does happen.

What happened if you need to go to different doctor but in the same network ? Would it still be covered ?

I would second this advise. There is a very good chance that the one doctor option isn't going to a strong patient advocate in cases where it comes down to cost vs optimal care. Many health issues are hereditary. If your immediate family and parents etc have a history of excellent health, maybe you can roll with the lower cost option. If there is a family history of serious health issues, I would want all of the options that you can have available to you.

    Re: Health Insurance

I agree with the options, I switched form an mho to an open plan because I wanted some choices available to me. Gotta pay for it though.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

    Re: Health Insurance

Is there an upper limit at which time they will pay 100%? What is it like for hospitalization and prescriptions?
