    micro brews

So i was sitting at old main last night for pint night and was thinking to myself that old main is pretty damn good. I was just curious what you guys thought of old main or if you knew of any other good micro breweries to try out here in central iowa.

When Olde Main is good, it's very good. But their biggest problem is consistency, which everyone will tell you in brewing is the hardest part of the business.

It's still my favorite in Iowa. Raccoon River is good, and so is Court Avenue. I tend to shy away from Rock Bottom which is a big corporate chain that is the parent company of Old Chicago.

live about 5 blocks from the monk. if you like belgian beers than it is a great place to get one. its true i am a little spoiled with how many breweries are in denver and CO as a whole. the only place that has more is Portland.

    Re: micro brews

I hope you are only talking about Old Maine brews, cause their food was terrible when I was there last. I really like the Long Face Ale and their Stout though, next time I am there I am just going to drink my dinner.

    Re: micro brews

There's a ton of breweries down here in the Triangle, and as a beer aficionado and local-food lover, I've tried just about all of them. Olde Main still has them beat, start to finish. There are a couple outstanding individual brews that are much more adventurous than anything OM ever brews, and many that are almost on par, but in terms of the ratio between price and quality, I'm realizing that Olde Main is a truly outstanding microbrewery. I used to occasionally get frustrated when a batch wasn't consistent, but now I realize that happens everywhere.

Enjoy OM's Pint Night while you can! North Carolina's idea of an outstanding pint night is $2.50 domestics (at a bar) or $3.50 pints (at a micro's brewpub).

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

    Re: micro brews

I've been hearing both good and bad (bad- mostly the food) about Old Maine, so it's never been high up on the try list when I'm back in town with family. I'll have to put it on the list and give it whirl the next time we go visit my brother-in-law. We're always looking for new places to try, anyways. Usually eat at The Cafe since my bro-in-law works there and the food is very good.

For me, (MPLS) Barley John Brew Pub is near work and I used to live near it. Great food. GREAT brews. Love that place.

And my fave for just getting good beer, the Bull Dog in uptown has an impressive lineup of Belgian styles on tap, with the 'correct' glassware to match.
