    Credit card recommendations

So, get my bill today and my credit card has started charging me a yearly "rewards program fee" of $30 AND a "minimum interest charge" of $1.50. I'm assuming that second one is monthly. I use my credit card for almost everything and rack up some pretty good rewards. Just got a check for $200 last month. But I know there are cards out there with just as good of rewards with none of these fees. Anyone got a recommendation?

Oh, the card I have now is a Chase Freedom Visa.

Try Discover. They have pretty legit rewards.

I'd just go with the one you find laying on the ground.

    Too soon?

I am using the chase freedom visa, they just switched to 5% reward categories, which seems pretty nice.

I have never seen a $30 rewards program fee or $1.50 minimum interest charge. Did this just happen this month? Maybe I just haven't got the charge yet. In any case, I will be on the lookout for this, thanks for the heads up.

My card added a minimum interest charge but it was for when you were getting charged interest. If you pay the balance in full each month you are not subject to interest.

    Re: Credit card recommendations

I have a Cap One. Gives 1% on everything and I think an annual bonus of 1.5% on your highest category. Not sure how they breakdown "categories", but last year I got about $80 on that alone - I'll say it was gasoline (??)

To this point, no fees of any sort.

Just got off the phone with them. The $1.50 was a mistake. Something about a credit getting charged to my account right on the bill date. Anyway, they took that off. The $30 annual fee is waived for the first year so apparently I switched over to the freedom card a year ago. The 5% categories you have to sign up for each quarter. They offered to switch me to a card with no annual fee but only 1% rewards so I'm gonna have to see how that adds up. Probably better off staying with the $30 fee for the better rewards.

As a card user it's hard to beat AmEx. As a business owner AmEx charges high rates so it's rough.

Don't they have an annual fee? Do they even have rewards?

My wife and I like our Discover and AMEX the best, but not everyone takes those still. I have Bank of America AMEX. No annual fee, decent interest rate(though went up like all of them), and okay rewards. 1 to 3% on rewards depending on type of purchase.

    Re: Credit card recommendations

Discover should be getting accepted almost everywhere soon. They lowered the rate they charge merchants last year to be inline with what MC and Visa charge. AMEX still charges alot more than those 3 though.

You must have the same card as me. I have the Chase Freedom card, but it isn't the same card they advertise on their web site. That card has 1% cash back on all purchases with 5% rewards on certain categories that rotate each quarter (home improvement in spring, travel in the summer, etc.).

The card I have has 1% on all purchases, 3% on gas/grocery/fast food purchases, plus the 5% that rotates quarterly. It does include a $30 annual fee (mine was also waived last year) but I'm like you - I use it for everything. So the extra 2% rewards I get on gas and groceries dwarfs the $30 annual fee.

I'm also trying to decide whether to switch. So much has changed in the credit card industry in the last 18 months and I think rewards are being scaled back pretty much across the board. Once upon a time, my Chase card was the best deal going, at least for me. That may still be the case, I don't know.

There is this card, which has a lot of potential and no annual fee. You do have to be a member, but all it takes is a one-time donation of $20 to some military group and you're set.

They have rewards. Pretty good ones actually.

They have something like 4 levels of cards; green, gold, platinum, black. You can pay annual fees to jump up levels or you can earn your way up. I started with green years ago and based on spending they will offer for you to go up levels with no fees.

I've had my card stolen and they handled it great. Charge backs they side with the customer. Hertz discounts and free #1 Gold. My wife wanted to stay at the Wynn in Vegas, but it was full so I called AmEx and they got us in. First class lounge at airports without buying first class tickets. Never had a wait when I called in.

On the business side the rates they charge merchants is crazy, but I know why. With a lot of our customers we get into conversations about if they should take AmEx and Discover. Many end up not doing it because of the fees, but if you ask the same business owner what card they have it's almost always an AmEx.

    Re: Credit card recommendations

I recently got a Discover card, and love everything about it except one thing: not accepted everywhere. Visa and MC are accepted 99.9% of the time, Discover probably 90%. As long as you have a backup card, Discover is a pretty good deal for the rewards.

I have the same card and have really taken advantage of the rewards on it over the years. I'm going to keep my eye open too but I haven't seen a charge like this yet either.

I hate when they did away with the $250 check when you got your balance up to $200. That was a "free" $50 that I waited to build my balance up just to get!
