Bring back the Big Eight...not 12

Did the Big 8 teams really gain from becomming the Big 12? I don't think so. In my view, we would be better off to have stayed the Big 8, and maybe added one or two teams of our choosing. The flip flop scheduling is nuts, and I don't see where ISU gained anything with the Texas Teams coming in. Give me back the Big 8!

The Big 8 was initially just going to add UT and A&M.

Our program definitely improved by being in the Big 12, but the increased competition makes it tough to notice. I did really like the Big 8 though, and the rivalries seemed a little more important then.

The Big 8 was definitely a great league but wouldn't be able to survive on a high level in this financial climate.

Enjoy the Big 12 because it wouldn't surprise me if the next big wave of conference realignment brings the bigger schools dropping the smaller ones to form super conferences.

If ya think our TV deals and such are bad now...just think how bad they'd be if it were still just the Big 8.

What's your speculation on this? This sort of thing really interests me, though I don't know too much about it. I started paying attention to sports just AFTER the dust had settled from the last mix-up. However, as far as I can tell, all the big conferences are quite stable. The only semi-major conference likely to go to pieces in the next couple of years is the Big East- that's highly unstable, and if the Big Ten makes an offer to one of those schools, that school will accept, and that will probably cause the whole conference to fall apart. However, I don't see that even the entire Big East dissolving would do anything to any of the big conferences.

    Indulge my curiosity!

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

I agree with EggMcClone....granted it would happen in 15+ years, but its possible. Seeing the SEC drop some of its lower teams and picking up Texas, FSU, Miami. Big 12/Big Ten merger with some teams getting left out. Along those lines.

Dude, when we were in the Big 8 we were on ESPN. Big 8 was part of the Thurday night games for football.

Re: Bring back the Big Eight...not 12

I would love to see the Big 8 back. There aren't any natural rivalries with the Texas schools, but I understand money may be the major factor here. Maybe the Texas schools should realize it is the Big XII that brought them into the spotlight. The old SW conference wasn't all that great. Regional rivalries are what make college football great, but I understand money rules.

That was then...you're telling me that would continue in today's environment.

    I think not.

And Some people would have us tranfer to the Big Ten. I would rather have the Big 12 since a lot of future football recruits will be from Texas and the South.

Re: Bring back the Big Eight...not 12

I loved the old Big 8!!

However, the Big 12 has been a huge benefit financially for all of the schools involved. The days of the "super conference" are here due to the negotiation of big $ tv deals.

Most likely had the old Big 8 tried to stay on its own it would have been split up with the various schools going into different conferences. And I think ISU might not have been able to get into a major conference...the Big 10 would have looked to add Nebraska and we would probably have ended up in the WAC or Mountain West.

I think most of the old Big 8 schools are just frustrated that the Texas schools have become so dominant on the field and court of play. We need to do something about that on the field / court.

By the way...having your games regularly televised on Thursday nights is a sure sign that you are not "big time".

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

The biggest reason is that spending has been spiraling out of control for some time now and there doesn't seem to be any movement to try to reign that in at all. The top echelon of schools are always looking at ways to maximize their revenue and although they are often doubling (or more) what other schools in their conference bring in they are really competing with the top schools in other conferences.

Eventually they may decide that they could be bringing in more money if they were in a conference with only the top teams and didn't have to worry about splitting it with the others.

I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon but there's definitely an arms race that is squeezing more and more schools and could lead to drastic actions. Who knows if it will happen but I've read speculation about it in various places.

Re: Bring back the Big Eight...not 12

If you look at the article about Pollard and the Big XII tv package money from a week or so ago, there's a pretty big dispairity in how the schools receive those big $$$. I'm sure we're getting more than we ever saw in the Big 8, but we're also getting routinely screwed in the "rich get richer, poor get poorer" game.

Biggest thing I hate about the new conference - aside from the catering to the south football schools come late season and never travelling north - is the fact that the basketball tourney isn't in KC every year. That was far and away the best thing the Big 8 had going for it. For all schools IMO, but especially ISU.
