Best Little League pitcher this year a girl?

If this is indeed the Year of the Pitcher, we can't let this story slide. Chelsea Baker, a 13-year-old from Plant City, Fla., has two perfect games in Little League competition; the only girl in an all-boys baseball league. With a 12-0 record this season and having never lost a sanctioned game in which she's pitched, some are calling her the best youth pitcher in the state, if not the country. Her secret weapon? A "nasty" knuckleball which she's spent the past four years perfecting, and was taught to her by the late Joe Niekro, the 22-year MLB veteran

I hope they make it to the Little League World Series what fun the announcers would have with that

Makes the "just filing my nails in the dugout" a little more believable.

Not saying that girls can't play in the same league as boys......but the boys in that league should be ashamed of themselves. Seriously. Even the worst teams in our old little leagues wouldn't get no-hit by the best pitchers in the league.

I promise you weren't seeing knuckle balls though.

Knuckleballs are for people that can't throw hard. When I pitched I would do a 2-seamer, fork ball, circle-change, and a cutter.

As a catcher, I don't care if I'm getting a 85 mph fastball or a 51 mph knuckleball if its a strike and isn't being hit.

if you have Joe to teach you, I imagine you throw it pretty well.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

Was it Joe or Phil Niekro that was caught with a file in his back pocket when he was pitching? I want to say Joe.

Probably because the other teams aren't used to someone pitching underhanded.

Actually when I was in little league a guy threw a nasty knuckleball. I remember hitting it pretty well, but not many on my team did. I remember playing him a few years later and he didn't throw it. I asked him about it and he said for some reason he couldn't throw it anymore.

Joe. Phil was more of a vaseline user.

Correct about it being Joe, but I believe that it was a small piece of sandpaper rather than a nail file. The video replay showed him trying to toss away the sandpaper as he was emptying his pocket while the umpire approached the mound. He tried to claim that he used it in the dugout to maintain his nails for the knuckleball and inadvertently put it in his pocket.
