    Air Conditioning Help!

I thought I had seen a thread here about AC going out, but couldn't find it when I searched. I came home from a day at basketball camp and it was 77...I went to feel the vent and had nothing. Our AC is not working and I checked the fuse box and had nothing off...I know next to nothing about this stuff and was wondering if there were any things I should check for before calling in the pros???

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

If no air is coming out of your vents it may be you furnace fan and not your AC. The fan on your furnace (usually in the basement) is what pushes the air. The AC is what cools it. If you are getting air out of your vents but not cold, then probably your AC unit.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Is it blowing air at all, ie is the interior unit running and also check the exterior unit.

No neither are running...I did try to turn the heat on (brilliant right?) and cranked it to 80 and the furnace didn't kick on downstairs...would that affect the A/C outside from running though? Cause neither was doing anything...

Also, any estimate on cost to replace AC unit/Furnace or both? Do most places cut a deal if you do both at the same time? Both units are pretty old and would likely need to be replaced sometime here anyway...

hmm, beyond my capability. I imagine it could be the thermostat, among other things.

Be careful who you call, I had a bad experience earlier.

probably looking at 2500 on up to replace I think. co-worker just had his replaced for about that, and it was lower than most other places were quoting.

Thanks for the tips! Anybody have a company they do recommend?

    Re: Air Conditioning Help!

It might be something simple like a relay that went out and may only cost you a couple hundred. I would say that if neither one is running it could actually be a good sign. I assume you have a kill switch on your furnace (probably looks like a regular light switch), that didn't get flipped off by chance did it?

Nope I tried flipping it off and back on...now I'm thinking it has to be a wiring thing...my father in law thinks I need to get to the breaker on the AC unit outside (I sided our house and didn't realize it was a pull-down cover so I trimmed around it and it's going to be a royal pain if I have to take off siding that low) but I'm thinking it's got to be a problem with wiring to the blower since the furnace isn't running either or else the thermostat somehow isn't connecting (it is on)...

    Thoughts?

    Re: Air Conditioning Help!

Same thing happened to us this weekend and it is still 85 in the house. Our problem is that there is air coming out of the vents (so we know the furnace works) but the outside unit is not running. We have flipped the breaker a couple of times and that has worked before but this time is not working. So, I know it is the outside unit but don't know what to look at when it comes to that. I am hoping that it is something as simple as a new motor. So, we'll see!
