Anybody read Pillars of the Earth...watching the mini-series on Stars?

Best book I've read in the last ten years...but I'm deliberately not watching the series so I can record every episode and watch in one big Pillar-fest. That said, without giving away details, just wondered if anybody had watched the first episode and what they thought of how well done the series is?

I've read the book but I'm not going to watch the series. Every single review makes it sound very dry and boring. Think I'll just stick with the book

I have NOT read the book (but really want to).

Just watched the first episode and I am blown away and hooked in! Great opening story to get you pulled into a bunch of characters, good acting.... the list goes on.

Great book...not sure if I want to spoil that by watching the tv series. Hopefully they do a good job with it.

I've actually read a number of VERY positive reviews thus far. I'm keeping an open mind...though I have no doubt it can't possibly live up to the book.

Re: Anybody read Pillars of the Earth...watching the mini-series on Stars?

I have read the book, and have watched the first 2 hour episode. They have changed a few things, but in general have remained pretty true to the book. So far, my opinion is positive on it. The problem you always get with these things is how the actors compare to your image of the main characters when reading the book. Here, they also do fairly well - they nailed Bishop Walleran, and do fairly good with Tom Builder. William is not at all how i pictured him, and neither is Ellen or Jack. Clearly, everyone views the characters differently though, so this is not a complaint.

So far, so good. Looking forward to part 2 this Friday.

I have not read the books. I watched the first half on my DVR this weekend.

Kudos to the ISU History Department and Dr. Zaring. I can remember all of this stuff.

My favorite book and author. I had no idea on this mini series! Thanks for the post.

My wife and I just got done watching the 2nd one. We're hooked. The "trial" scene at the end of episode two is a jaw dropper.

I have read the book and thought it was one of the best I have ever read. I am also watching the mini series. I watched the first episode on Directv's 101 and then ordered STARZ so I can watch the rest of the episodes.

FYI, Netflix users can stream it.

Re: Anybody read Pillars of the Earth...watching the mini-series on Stars?

I read the book in high school and am greatly enjoying the TV series so far. Since it has been so long since I've read the book I don't really notice the changes made for TV. It seems to be capturing the same feel the book had and I'm hooked.
