    My ISU bball schedule for new Big 12

    (For fun and debate!)

    Assuming the new Big 12 basketball schedule goes double-round-robin, I created a typical ISU schedule I’d like to see.

    I patterned the conference schedule similar to the Pac-10, with natural geographical clusters. It makes travel sense, but only if Big 12 went to Thurs-Sat as the normal setup (wouldn’t affect Big Monday, but might be lucrative to ESPN for its Thursday night lineup, instead of having Big 12 on Wednesday — maybe B12/Pac10 situation? Discuss.)

    You’ll notice some obvious differences from current reality — I can address those as needed.

    Tell me what you like or dislike, adjustments you’d make, or Create-Your-Own.

    Montana State
    Eastern Illinois
    v. Western Michigan (Some Early Season Tournament)
    v. Clemson/San Diego State (SEST)
    v. Notre Dame/UTEP/Georgia/Wichita State (SEST)
    SIU-Edwardsville (Barry Stevens Memorial Cyclone Challenge)
    Elon/Colgate (Barry Stevens Memorial Cyclone Challenge)
    Minnesota
    @Northern Iowa
    Drake
    Washington State (Big 12/Pac-“12” Challenge)
    North Dakota
    UMKC
    @Oklahoma*
    @Oklahoma State*
    Texas A&M*
    Texas*
    @Baylor*
    @Texas Tech*
    Kansas*
    Kansas State*
    @Missouri*
    @Iowa
    Oklahoma State*
    Oklahoma*
    @Texas*
    @Texas A&M*
    Texas Tech*
    Baylor*
    @Kansas State*
    @Kansas*
    Missouri*

    I included a fictional early-season tournament, in hopes ISU becomes relevant enough to get invited again with some regularity.

    Re: My ISU bball schedule for new Big 12

    Iowa will never be placed in the middle of conference season. It will always be played in December. this does bring up a good question though, will the big 12 have to schedule games earlier? We already have had games before students are back and this could lead to more. I still don't see conference games before the new year like the MVC, but this may eliminate the early January tuneup games. If this is the case will ISU start offering students packages with these games included like they do with the football games in KC?

    Interesting this year in the Big12 PAC 10 thing are we playing at Washington State or in Ames? Also why do we always play one of the Dakotas didn't one of them beat us a couple years ago

    I used UND for regional purposes — could insert any of the Dakotas in there. It might make more sense to schedule Valley teams for one slot, with a chance it would boost schedule strength slightly.

    My fictional schedule

    Dubuque (exhibition)
    Buena Vista (exhibition)

    Kennesaw State
    Cal-State Fullerton
    Tennessee State
    Drake
    North Dakota State (@ Target Center, Minneapolis)
    Wisconsin (@ Target Center, Minneapolis)
    @Northern Iowa
    @Iowa
    Minnesota
    UMKC (@ Sprint Center, Kansas City)
    Arkansas (@ Sprint Center, Kansas City)
    St. Louis
    Bradley
    Tulsa

    Not sure how conference play is set up, but we have no say in it anyway.

    I'm big on neutral site games, especially in alumni hotbeds for Iowa State.

    Re: My ISU bball schedule for new Big 12

    What I like in a schedule? A little tricky buisness,

    Weber State
    UC Santa Barbara
    South Dakota
    Sam Houston State
    @Drake
    Pre-Season Tournament
    Pre-Season Tournament
    Louisiana Tech
    Top 50 BCS Team (@ Chicago or Minneapolis or Kansas City)
    @Northern Iowa
    Iowa
    @Minnesota
    St. Louis
    @North Texas

    This would give us a opponents winning % of .615 even before Big 12 play, the only two losing teams on the schedule Drake and Iowa (depending on Pre-Season Tournament of course)

    LOVE those neutral site games -- great choices for opponents in each (ISU alumni hotbeds but also has regional appeal for the opposition).

    I'd like to see this with some sample teams in the preseason tourney ...

    I like the Top 50 BCS team playing at Mpls/KC -- again, a sample would be cool.

    Interesting: road game vs. a Sun Belt team.

    Re: My ISU bball schedule for new Big 12

    As long as we are forced to play away games in the Big 12ish I think we should be playing road games in the pre season. Like Houston this year I picked a good but not great team to play on the road right before the real season starts.

    wait, what do you mean being "forced to play away games in the big 12"? we aren't ever going to play every big 12 game at home..
