Column: Cyclones motivated for a better 2010-11 season

Here are some thoughts on conversations that I had with Diante Garrett and Scott Christopherson on Sunday night.

I hope this team makes the most of their new lease on life this season. There are guys on this team, most notably Garrett, that really deserve that.

Coolest possible result of next season? My pick is Diante making a last minute lay-up to upset KU in the Big XII tournament and riding off into the sunset vindicated for all the crap he's taken over the years.

I like Garrett, but the kid needs to finish thats all there is to it. He cant miss open layups or take stupid 3 pt shots when its not his cup of tea. He needs to be smart he has a ton of talent but he needs to finish and he could be great.

I think this team will flourious without CB. Not saying that CB was a cancer, but it seemed like the other players were holding back their game to ensure Craig got his shots in. The last season when CB tried working on outside game instead of getting his butt on the blocks, really showed.

If White does get to play, with the new coaching staff - I am calling for an 11 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Awesome article, well done. What IS the deal with Calvin Godfrey?! I'm beginning to believe he won't ever be making it to campus.

I'm loving the enthusiasm here, but there are way too many question marks at this point to predict an NCAA Tournament bid. The highest I'd go right now is being on the bubble for the NIT, and that may be a stretch.

Iowa State still plans on Godfrey making it and he still plans on coming to Iowa State. Just taking care of some academic stuff back home. We'll know in a few weeks if it actually gets taken care of or not I guess. That's all I know.

Re: Column: Cyclones motivated for a better 2010-11 season

I feel bad for Garrett. One of the most under-appreciated players, by his own fan base, that I've ever seen.

He's been one of the top 3 assist per 40 minutes guys in the league since the moment he stepped on campus (2008, 2009) and led the conference last season (2010).

His 3-point percentage last season wasn't nearly as bad as you would think reading this site. 19 of 54, 35%, translates into an effective FG% of 53%, which was well above our team's total effective FG% from last season.

Re: Column: Cyclones motivated for a better 2010-11 season

I don't see why Garrett wouldn't make huge strides this season. Fast breaks hes going to be able to take his guy to the rim without worrying about another defender rotating over like he had to under McDermott and he has proven he can pass, so when on fast breaks when he sees he doesn't have the shot he can make he will be able to dish it off much easier than a 5 on 5 where the defense is set.

If Godfrey doesn't make it we'll have an extra scholarship for the nex class. Not what I'm hoping for but we'll be OK. He sounds pretty talented and tough.

" It doesn’t look like Eric McKnight will be an impact guy right away. Calvin Godfrey still isn’t on campus and nobody really knows what to expect from Jordan Railey."

    That quote scares me

Dont know if this has been posted anywhere. But I like where Hoiberg calls Godfrey an animal.

Depending if White is granted eligibility for 2010-11 this team could be salty. The lineup could look like this with flexibility to go small with a 3 guard lineup:

    pg: DG/Jake
    sg: Scotty/Phillips
    sf: Ejim/Phillips
    pf: White/Godrey/Mcknight
    c: JV/Railey/Godrey

The more I hear about Ejim I think he'll end up starting for us. People debate if Scotty is going be in the starting lineup but with the lack of shooters I think he has to be in there. The starting line up allows us to spread out the floor with Scotty and JV going to the wings which can allow DG and Ejim to drive. White is free to pick his spots mid range or down low. Defensively it looks solid with Ejim's growing reputation.
