    Hotels in Ames

We are planning to take my son to Ames to register for summer school next week. It is impossible to find a hotel in Ames on June 6. Is there something going on that would fill up every hotel in town?

I'm not sure what would be going on June 6th. Maybe registration officially starts? They do usually have a lot of people coming in over the summer (4-H, cheerleaders, sports camps, music, etc.). If you still haven't found anything, there is at least one newer hotel in Boone that looks decent. I'd try that.

    Re: Hotels in Ames

An excellent trick that has worked for me before is to make reservations for a place in Story City or Ankeny, but the day you are coming to Ames, call the Gateway or Baymont, almost always there is a cancellation or a room just opens up out of no where. It's a long shot, but at least you have a back up in a nearby town.

Try Ankeny if you cant find anything in Ames. Just as close as Boone... plus it not BOONE! There are probably many people coming in for registration and the church chat, there are quite a few right outside Ames like Hampton Inn and a few others on Highway 30.

ISU has Freshman Orientation during the entire month of June. That's why ALL the hotels are full.

My parents liked to stay at the Heartland Inn. Very clean, nice, and inexpensive.

    Re: Hotels in Ames

Thanks for the help. We couldn't find anything in Ames, Boone or Ankeny. Since I have never been to Ames before, I am a little apprenhensive of going there without a reservation. I guess we can stay in Des Moines if there is nothing when we get there.

    Re: Hotels in Ames

    Here's my recommendations:
Don't stay at the Lincoln Lodge..unless it's had an overhaul lately, I would not recomment.
-You can get rooms at the memorial union, plus a discount if you mention you are visiting Iowa State. They are clean but small. But certainly ok
-The new Grand Stay Suites may have rooms available
-The Americaninn in Boone is nice, and not too far
-Ankeny has lots of good hotels, a 25 minute drive
    That's my two cents worth.

There's a Super 8 in Nevada right off of US 30. Not fancy, but a place to stay and a little closer than Ankeny or Boone.

Apparently, they think being a glorified suburb of DM makes them superior. Actually Boone would probably be less expensive.
