Calling all Lawyers/anybody with the pleasant experience of being sued for CCard debt

    1. What do I do to protect myself from my wages being garnished???
    2. Do I have to hire a lawyer to do this, or is it something I can do on my own??
    3. Its only $6500, but I also don't make very much money, should I just file for bankruptcy?? I do have a mortgage, no other credit cards.
    4. Thank You so much for any help.............................

I used to work in collections. The CC companies will settle for less than half of the original balance if you can pay it off in one lump sum.

I wouldn't file for bankruptcy over $6,500. Has to be some way to pay it off if they will work with you.

Could you go to the bank barrow the money needed to pay it off and then pay the bank back at a lower rate?

    Couple questions:

You only owe $6500 and you're considering bankruptcy?!?! What a horrible idea...

What's your credit like? Can you open another account with low balance transfer rates and transfer the balance? Also, you could get a second part-time job and use that income to pay off the balance.

Be responsible and live up to your obligations. Get a second job if necessary.

I agree with this and I have been trying to get a second, and still am.

You don't have some assets to sell off like a car, furniture, etc. that could help with this? What kind of expenses do you have where you can't make some of this money up by canceling things like your cable/sattalite plan or any other subscription type services that you can either go with something basic or eliminate altogether for the short term? As someone else said a 2nd job would help a lot too.

sell stuff and pay it back. Sorry but I'm a firm believer in if you can't afford it, don't buy it. Start with cancelling your internet connection and cell phone. Those things are luxuries and not neccesities.

These days a lot of people dont have land lines and just have cells. A phone is a necessity, especially if looking for additional work.

Good idea, got enough equity, but already got the loan modified due to having crappy credit and not being able to refinance.

I agree, I use my CC for everything I can but I spend within my means and pay off the balance every month. There is no reason to be carrying a balance on a CC, especially at the interest rates they charge so I don't feel much sympathy for those who rack up CC debt yet have things they probably shouldn't have bought with it in the first place.

Go talk to Consumer Credit of Iowa, aka Tom Coats.

Just be wary, they might try to convince you need Bankruptcy, but for $6500 you don't want to do that. It's a free sit down session, so won't hurt to listen to their ideas on how to help you out.

They might be able to work a deal out directly with the credit card company to cut your interest rate down to less then 10% and with the condition you make them monthly payment & close the account.
