FedEx van obliterated in head on crash

Devoted Father, Husband Killed in Crash | NBC Dallas-Fort Worth

Sad story...a drunk driver crossed the freeway median, got airborne, and smashed nearly head-on into a FedEx delivery van. The van driver was killed, while the drunk driver survived. Given the wreckage shown in the video, it is a miracle the drunk driver survived.

My question is why this drunk driver still had a license after 2 previous illegal substance possession busts and a recent arrest for drunk driving.

Do you really think that it would have made a difference?
It's not like people pay much attention to licenses anyway. How many times have you seen headlines about people dying in car accidents involving people with suspended licenses?

Re: FedEx van obliterated in head on crash

As I have said before -- many, many high profile fatal accidents in Texas (particularly the DFW area where I live) involved prior DWI offenders. It is scary when I really think about it.

On the North Dallas Tollway within the past several months there have been multiple accidents where drunks get on the wrong side of the toll way and run into someone else head on. Like I said -- really scary when critically examined.

It wouldn't have hurt anything. I've heard of cases where neighbors of drunks concerned for the safety of their kids have reported drunks driving on a suspended license, which resulted in said drunks getting thrown in jail.

Speaking of North Dallas, I just googled Texas drive thru liquor store, just to post a picture of one, and this was at the top of the page

    Place page
    114 North Prairie Avenue

Can't imagine that kind of mentality that allows these places to exist helps keep drunks off the road.

Remember, too, that in Texas, passengers can drink all they want.

    Two problems...

First, many people around here just don't think that drinking and driving is big deal. Many do, but too many don't.

Secondly, DFW has an "entertainment" persona to maintain. Tough DWI sentences don't fit will into that image. Drunk driving is an "unpleasant" subject, and doesn't help the "entertainment" image either, so these things don't get alot of coverage. For the horrific nature of this accident, it received very little coverage. As far as I can tell, NBC 5 was really the only local news station that did a follow up story.

IMO, the sentences actually handed out to most DWI offenders around here are FAR too lenient. I suppose it will take some tragedy, like a drunk with prior DWIs plowing into a crowd at JerryWorld before people wake up.

I think this is correct - the open container laws have changed over the years.
