    Billy Donovan to the NBA

Can't say I saw this one coming...especially after he turned down the Kentucky job.

Looks like he will become the next coach of the Orlando Magic. They must be paying him a crapload!

FOX Sports on MSN - NBA - Donovan close to deal with NBA's Magic

Thank god, hopefully this deflates the Florida Bball Juggernaught he was building!

ESPNEWS says 6 years, 36 million.

Orlando is a good job right now, can't blame him. On the other hand, he makes good money at Florida and has that established. I wish I had to make tough decisions like this.

Financially he's set but when was the last time a hot shot college coach had success in the NBA? I guess he can come back to the college ranks like Floyd after making a few million before he's inevitably fired after a few years as most guys that have made the jump are.

No, I think Florida losing 6+ players from back-to-back National Title teams is what deflates the juggernaut.

Well, Florida's 07 class features two 5 stars, and 3 four stars.

Their 06 class consists of three 4 stars and a 3 star.

Something tells me these guys will bounce back.

Re: Billy Donovan to the NBA

I'll get this out of the way because we know someone will post it.

Q: "Any chance of us landing _______ recruit now that Donovan is leaving Florida?"

    A: NO

And then go check out there potential recruits on Rivals or Scout and you will see that this juggernaught was going to be continuing...

It's not the same. Most of the college coaches, except for Pitino, that have made that jump, went to teams that were bottom feeders, or in Tim's case, about to be.

Orlando made the playoffs, and has a bonafide star in Howard. Plus, they have a ton of cap room. I think that with as weak as the Eastern Conference is, a couple of roster moves, and he can have a contender on his hands.

I think winning said titles will put them into the position to get some decent recruits.

Re: Billy Donovan to the NBA

Tim Floyd had a talented team in New Orleans that made the playoffs with a lineup that had many injuries to key players and he still got canned. We'll see but the track record and shelf life for college coaches that go to the NBA has not been good recently. If he lasts the length of his contract I'll be shocked because even veteran NBA coaches have a hard time staying with 1 team for 6 years. There are maybe a handful that have been with their current team more than 5 years I bet. Jerry Sloan is the 1 guy I can think of, Phil Jackson while taking a break has been with the Lakers for awhile, Gregg Popavich of the Spurs and after that I really struggle to find guys that have been with their team for a long time. Pat Riley keeps coming back then going away all the time so he somewhat qualifies.

Re: Billy Donovan to the NBA

One advantage that Donovan has over alot of college coaches that have made the jump is that he actually played in the NBA... It may have been a short career but it goes a long way in earning the players respect and their ability to relate to the players... I am very sad to see him go, but wish him luck... Hopefully the Gators can regroup and get another winner...

Even with those recruits - would they have won the National Championship next season? I'm guessing no.
