Could an ISU all-star team win it all?

I was argueing with one of my friends who is a sqwuakeye fan and he claimed ISU couldnt win a NC even if they fielded an all-time team. I was so fustrated i actually left his house. I think he was just trying to get me riled up. So that leads me to my question, Could we win an NC if we fielded an All-Time ISU team? I don think there is any question.

    Football that is.

Re: Could an ISU all-star team win it all?

if the question is "could ISU win a national championship if we fielded an all star team and no one else was fielding an all star team" then the answer is an unequivicable "yes, we'd have a very good chance of winning a national championship."

Of course we could. But so could a pretty good percentage of the schools in the nation.

if the question is "could ISU win a national championship in an all-star on all-star league" than the answer is "well, sure, anything's possible, but it's not at all likely."

Yes, depending on the year. Ie: The competition that year.
We should have won it all in 2000 and that wasn't even an "All-time team".

Edit: I was in bball mode too! Sorry, probably not in football.

No because some of our best players are too old to mix it up with the young kids now.

Seriously, there has been a lot of talent that has passed through ISU over the years. I think that if you picked the top four at each position throughout the years and built a squad (all at their prime) you could have a legitimate chance to contend. I don't think Iowa can boast that they had anyone who was head and shoulders above all ISU players all time at any position when they came within a game of an undefeated regular season. (Who did that team lose to again?)

Edit: I assumed the OP was saying our all-star team vs. all other schools teams from a particular year (not their all star teams).

Re: Could an ISU all-star team win it all?

I am talking an All-Star ISU team plays just a regular season. If it were all teams fielding an All-Star squad we would have just about as much chance as we do now. Teams like Nebraska, USC, Texas, Florida would have guys on their 3rd string that would start for us in that case.

Re: Could an ISU all-star team win it all?

I would say it was definitely possible as we were ranked in the top 10 with much less than our all stars. We just had one stellar athlete. If you put the Keith Sims types on the line with T Davis in the backfield and Seneca at QB, and all the other NFL types that have played. Give them Johnny Majors or Earl Bruce as their coach there is no doubt they could play against all the other teams' regular teams. Could they win it all against Bama, Neb, FSU, Texas all stars, I doubt it.

Anyway, why get riled up by something that has no answer? You guys that let your Hawk buddies get to you cracks me up.

I don't think our all star FB could compete for a NC against other schools regular teams.

We’ve had all Americans at every position on offense, and most positions on defense. A team starting an All-American at almost every position would be a huge favorite for a national championship. Honestly he had to be messing with you.

    +1

I think some of you guys need to look a little closer at ISU FB history.

Re: Could an ISU all-star team win it all?

We absolutely could win a national title with an all-time Iowa State team vs normal teams from the rest of the country. In fact, I suspect we would be pre-season #1 and the favorites.

We never have many in a single season, but we have had some very good college football players (and some NFL) come through Ames.

I mean come on, imagine Troy Davis with an offensive line and an offense full of other options led by Seneca Wallace. They would be unstoppable.
