Exclamation Possible rabid coon in Urbandale

Just a friendly warning, I live on 71st St in Urbandale and have heard from neighbors about a potentially rabid raccoon wandering around the neighborhood. It was last seen near 71st and Palm behind a garage. I called animal control and they told me that they only handle cats and dogs, unless the animal in not moving. (not sure what they actually get paid to do) So be careful with your kids and your pets!

They did not see any foaming at the mouth but it was out in broad daylight walking around like it was drunk and making a lot of chattering noise.

If it was out in the middle of the day, and staggering around then it is sick
for sure. Stay away from it, and if animal control won't take care of it then
I do'nt know what to tell you.

I would go buy a box trap, you should have it within a couple days...... Handle it any way you wish after that...

Acting drunk is a classic sign of rabid racoons. Since animal control wouldn't do their job I would call 911 to alert the police. If anyone sees this racoon they should shoot it (preferably not in the head so that they can check the brain to see it was rabid).

Not the easiest thing to kill without shooting them in the head which you don't want to do. A good body shot with a 410 will do the trick without freakin out the neighborhood with a high caliber boom. Happy hunting.

Re: Possible rabid coon in Urbandale

Rabies is not a fun thing to deal with either if you have to get the treatments. We had a few bats in our house a couple of years ago. One night in particular we were jarred awake by our cat jumping around the bed. I saw something at first but thought it was a moth but after coming to I realized it was a bat. It got away before we could catch it. In any case just out of coincidence I had a doctors appointment a couple of days later and in conversing with the doc I brought up the bat. He said that since it was in the room with both of us sleeping there is no way you could confirm or not if the bat had any contact with us. He recommended we go through the vaccination process. For those that don't know, it's not just a shot or two, it's a multitude of shots. In fact the first time you get it you have to take a booster which is based upon your weight. I'm a little heavier of a guy so it was going to take eight shots of the booster right away plus two shots for the vaccine and then you had to go in like four or five more times over the course of a month for more vaccine shots. Needless to say, after debating it with my wife, the decision was made to just play our cards and hope we didn't come in contact with a rabid bat. It's been a couple of years now so we made the right choice. I hate needles!

Watch it man there's a beverage here!
