FOX Sports on MSN - NBA - Trade me: Kobe tells Lakers he wants out

I'm not a big NBA fan but this is a big story.

I'm not the biggest NBA fan, but if I had to pick a favorite team, it would have to be the Lakers. Do you think think they would deal him to the Sonics for the #2 pick and take Durrant? They really don't need Odon b/c I think that Bynum kid of theirs is going to be a good center in his own right.

    Re: Kobe: Trade me

I doubt that would happen, but you never know. The most difficult thing will be to find a team that can take on his $20 million salary.

    Re: Kobe: Trade me

I don't have the most knowledge on this, but can't any team take on the salary and if they go over the limit then pay the luxury tax? I think that when you're above the limit, that you're just not allowed to sign free agents to max contracts.

The NBA has a "soft cap" while the NFL has a "hard cap." I may be wrong about the specifics on that, so if someone else knows for sure, feel free to correct me. It's something like that though because the Knicks have been over the cap for years.

    Re: Kobe: Trade me

I've been a long time Lakers fan (since about the late '70s). Jerry West was a master GM/whatever title he held. Kupchak not so much...Smush Parker as a starting guard??? Please! Also, I think it's time for Jerry Buss to sell. He seems disinterested.

Kobe already has 3 rings and helped run Shaq out of town. Boo-hoo, he gets what he deserves. I think he's a selfish punk so I hope he's stuck on crappy teams the rest of his career.

    Re: Kobe: Trade me

Since the NBA has a "soft" salary cap, they could go over the limit, and I'm sure there are a lot of teams out there that would take him on and eat the luxury tax hit.

    Here's what I'm thinking -

Mamba to Seattle for Ray Allen, and Rashard Lewis. Bryant and Durant in the backcourt.

Mamba to Celtics for Pierce and this year's #5 pick.

Not surprised and not impressed. Kobe whines too much.

I believe for a trade to work, the salaries have to match or come close to it. There are certain rules that I don't fully understand, but I don't think the deal could be Kobe for the #2 pick straight up. It would have to include other pieces. Lewis would have to be part of a sign and trade, but I think his and Allen's contracts would be too high compared to Kobe's. You're also probably swapping picks with the Lakers. Throw in Kwame Browns expiring contract and it might work. Kobe, Kwame, First Rounder for Allen, Lewis (sign and trade) and the #2 pick.

I wonder if something like Kobe and the Lakers' #1 for Rashard Lewis (sign and trade), the #2 pick and Chris Wilcox.

That said, I'm not sure Kobe would want to go to Seattle. If Ray Allen is part of the deal, Kobe still has a crappy supporting cast. If Allen stays, they both play SG.

I kind of doubt Boston is the place for Kobe. Seems to be too much of a distraction and I don't know that he's the right guy to lead a young team.

    Re: Kobe: Trade me

The Knicks have all kinds of bad contracts but why would the Lakers want any of them? Issiah Thomas is one of the worst GMs ever. He basically traded for what he calls "assets" when in reality he's been every GM's best friend when they want to unload bad contracts of underachieving or washed up players for his expiring contracts.

Most teams that have the contracts to match up to get Kobe either have bad players or are not going to give up too much star power to get him. I put the odds of him remaining a Laker and somehow the Lakers adding a few decent role players around him at about 70% right now. Look at the teams with big contracts they would trade the Lakers and would Kobe be any better off on their team?

    Knicks: HAHAHAHA!
Memphis: Gasol but can't see Kobe going here
Portland: Randolf but again, Kobe in Portland? They'd probably have to give up the Oden pick too.
Seattle: Would be the easiet to work with Lewis being a sign and trade but would Kobe like it there and plus I'm sure the Lakers want the Durant pick
Boston: For Pierce but their roster is a mess
Sacramento: For Artest and some. Roster is a mess though so no better situation for Kobe

Not sure where Kobe things he'll be able to go and be both happy and have a better team. Most good teams don't want to give up a ton to get him or don't have the contracts to do it.

It's also possible that Kobe won't be going anywhere, and this is just his version of a "wake-up call" for the Lakers front office...

    Re: Kobe: Trade me

Just another reason why professional athletes irritate me. They will go almost anywhere that is willing to pay them the most money and offer the most years for financial stability then the b!tch and moan when their contract cripples the team from adding quality players around them. If it was all about winning you'd take less money so your team could afford better players. You can't have it both ways unless of course you are the Yankees but even they haven't won with a payroll over $200 mil lately.

    Re: Kobe: Trade me

Denver has been trying to trade K-mart. I've heard talks of Artest to Denver, but I guess I wouldn't rule out Kobe either. They tried to get him in 2004.

Wasn't Colorado the state where Kobe got into all of that trouble? He should probably go somewhere else

Yeah, Kobe in Denver would not go over well plus I don't think K-Mart has much value right now being he can't stay healthy.
