    Bear Tranqulized in Postville

Bear Tranquilized After Invading Iowa Town - Des Moines News Story - KCCI Des Moines

I am pleased to see that some awe inspiring wildlife is returning to Iowa. I would love to see a cougar or a black bear on a hike in Iowa. It's nice to know that there will be a possibility of some encounters that will provide some wonderment in the outdoors.

It's kind of funny how people freak out when they see a black bear, even if it's not "supposed" to be there.

I think black bears are present in all us states except 6, including Iowa... Until now. It's a black bear. Rarely dangerous. Deal with it.

Diane Lensing said she and her husband, Dave, spotted the bear in their garden on July 3 while they were eating breakfast. By that evening, the bear had moved to a city park and climbed a tree.
Wow, that is an invasion...I've seen squirrels do the same thing!

The DNR did the right thing. Too many folks out there with the "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality that would love the chance to kill a bear just to kill it. To me it's senseless to kill something just because it's not protected under Iowa law, or because you fear it. I own 350 acres in Northern Clayton -Southern Allamakee and manage it strictly for wildlife betterment.I do alot of work so I can hunt that wildlife that I feed and provide a home for.I would love to have a few bears on my land. I have trailcam pictures of bobcats and even 2 mountain lions.I have never seen them with hundreds of hours spent on that farm.
If you are a true sportsman....you understand the big picture and do things the right way.

    Not meant as a rant...just my .02

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

While hiking the Appalachian Trail somewhere in Tennessee a black bear and her cub crossed the trail less than 30 feet in front of me. When they saw me they just bolted. If a mother bear with a small cub is still scared of me I'd say they pose no real threat.

Cougars scare me a bit based on what they prey upon, but black bears are predominantly fruit, nut, and herbivorous eaters. I think they occasionally eat small animals like squirrels and woodchucks, but don't really pose a threat to livestock. Cougars are a bit more of a problem given the amount of livestock raised in this state.
