    KC residents: My potential commute?

For those of you that didn't see my thread a few weeks ago, I'll be moving to Kansas City for student teaching from August-October, and I've been looking for a place to live. It's been a tough search, since I'll only be there for two months, am on a student budget, and am trying to live close to my school in south Leawood. (If you have suggestions, let me know!)

I may have found a great place to live, but I need your opinion on the commute. It's a house in South Hyde Park, MO. To get to my school, Google Maps recommends this route:

    • Volker Blvd/Hwy 56 east to Hwy 71
    • Hwy 71 south to I-435/Hwy 50
    • I-435/Hwy 50 west to State Line Road
    • State Line Road south to West 119th St (KS)/West Minor Drive (MO)
    • 119th west to Mission Road
    • Mission Road south to near West 135th St

Google Maps estimates that would take me 27 minutes down in the morning, and 29 minutes back in the afternoon/evening. Yahoo Maps says about the same thing. Bing had the same times as well (except for recommending Roe Avenue instead of State Line Road).

What do you all think? Is 30 minutes accurate, too long, or too short? I'll probably be leaving home in the morning between 7:00-7:30am, and coming home from school between 4:00 and 6:00 (but probably during rush hour).

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

I wouldn't think it would be anymore than 30 minutes. On 71 you should be going opposite the heavier traffic. The few mile stretch on 435 might be heavy, but it has been widened in the past few years. You should be going the opposite way from most traffic on State Line as well.

you might even want to look at just going out your front door south to Brush creek and head west and you can run south on Ward Pkwy (pretty quick moving really) till 75th then go west to State line or Mission. You can even run Brush creek into johnson drive then to Mission and south if you want to avoid the rush of traffic.
I would check a few out so you don't become bored also

    grandview triangle is a beeeaaatch.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

30 minutes sounds about right. Shouldn't be too bad for you.

I would take Ward, but even the triangle probably wouldn't take more than 30 minutes.

Re: KC residents: My potential commute?

My dilemma: this place in Hyde Park is a nice house, with some really cool people, and has low rent, but is quite a ways from Leawood. I've also gotten a roommate offer from a guy that would let us find an apartment in OP/Leawood (not as cheap as this house, but I can afford a 2BR place there) but it'd be with a person I could coexist with but wouldn't be thrilled about (we're not close in personality). The commute really makes a difference in this decision. I can handle 30 minutes if it's actually 30 minutes. If it turns out to be 50, and I'm living in Hyde Park, I'm gonna have an ugly couple of months.

I'd love to hear some more feedback from KC folks.
