    Hwy 20 question

Is Hwy 20 now 4 lane from I35 all the way to Dubuque? I've got some friends coming up from central Iowa to NE Iowa and I'm trying to decide if that's the best way to send them, but I can't remember the last time I was on Hwy 20 other than right around Waterloo/Cedar Falls.

    Thanks.

    Ames to Harpers Ferry.

I don't even know if they'll ask. He's a big boy and can figure it out for himself, but just in case, I figured I might as well know. I was pretty sure about Hwy 20 but wasn't going to send them that way without confirmation. If he asks, I'll send them 35 to 20 then dump them off at Manchester and send them north on 13, through Elkader and then over to Marquette. I'm guessing that's what Google/Mapquest/a Garmin would do.

    Thanks for the help fellas.

    Re: Hwy 20 question

Are there any plans to make Hwy 20 a 4-lane divided highway from Ft Dodge to Sioux City? I know there's been rumors forever, but just wondering if anyone knew anything concrete one way or another.

No, once you get to fort dodge it is 2 lanes.

    Re: Hwy 20 question

Hwy 20 is 4 lanes past Ft. Dodge for about 2 miles. I travel that every weekend to Okoboji. Hwy 20 is going to be 4 lanes all the way to Sioux City by next summer probably. They just broke ground a couple weeks ago to finish the last stretch from Sioux City to Highway 71ish.

Yes....and they're scheduled to open another section later this fall between FT. Dodge and Hwy #4 to the west. They're working on the next stretch between Hwy #4 and Hwy #71 that will be open in a couple of years too.

I would have them take the 187 exit. This is quicker by heading North on 187 then West on 3 through Strawberry Point then to North to Elkader on 13 from Strawberry Point. At least this seems to be the quickest way when we head to Prairie Du Chien.

The groundbreaking was in Sac County, for the portion from Early (71) to Fort Dodge (169).

Current plans call for the road to be a four-lane facility from Dubuque to Early by 2013. Survey and design work is ongoing from Early to Moville, the final 42-mile segment to be upgraded to four-lane status.

    This sounds right.

Also, have something to keep from falling asleep on 20. Not as bad as driving through Nebraska, but not fun.

Is 187 the Winthrop exit? I had thought of that. It would save the time of backtracking back to the west b/w Manchester and Strawberry Point.

It goes through the edge of Lamont and hits 3 at a roundabout at the Starmont school.

I believe it is the Lamont exit from a signage standpoint. I think the Winthrop exit is before it. I just know I am usually happy to get to the exit. As many have stated the Hwy 20 drive for this is LONG and boring. Even worse on the way home after a weekend of boating.
