Grain Belt Premium medals at 2010 U.S. Open Beer Championships

August Schell Brewing Company: Since 1860

Grain Belt has come a long way from being your dad's beer, or a $1 "garbage can." It's never been at our tailgates because it's hip, retro, or kitschy. It's a fine, fine beer that just happens to sport ISU colors. It scored second place for adjunct lagers at the 2010 U.S. Open Beer Championships.

It was better when the Minnesota Brewing Co. made it, IMHO. Somehow, the transfer of the product/brand from MN BRewing Company to Schell made it sweeter in taste. Best served ice cold.

Amen brother. I absolutely refuse to go ice fishing without my Preemo's. It has become my beer for everything as of the last five years.

I've never been a fan of Schell. And I can't say that I've tried Grain Belt since my freshman year at ISU! Might have to try it out again this fall.

Good stuff and the ISU colors are a nice bonus.

I love Grain Belt Premium. I'm glad that it is becoming easier to buy around here.

We ALWAYS drink the GBPs while at the lake. When they're ice cold, there's not much better.

Another Preemo fan here. Was at Target Field (Twin's new stadium) over the weekend, and Grain Belt was EVERYWHERE. I loved it.

I like GBP, but for some reason I find that it has a blueberry aftertaste. Anyone else get that?

I really enjoy the premium when up north just as I enjoy the lonestar when down south.

Re: Grain Belt Premium medals at 2010 U.S. Open Beer Championships

I never liked the taste of the old Grain Belt beer. The newer stuff suffers less from quality control issues. It is 'sweeter' than the old beer, but contrary to what I would have believed, in this case, sweeter is better for this beer. The ingredients are well balanced with the sweetness. It also doesn't suffer from the typical problem with Schell beer (watery). Those who like a hoppy beer would probably not like it. But IMHO it is more like a 'classic' american style beer than anything on the market right now. And here in the twin cities area it is as reasonably priced as beer from the big boys.

Miss the old flavor? Look for "Mountain Crest". A beer built in Wisconsin for the Canadian market. Old GBP fans tell me it tastes a lot like old GBP. Its available in the Minneapolis area for usually under $12 for a 24 pack.

    Cheers

I'm not positive on this, but I think you're tasting actual wheat and barley as opposed to corn and rice. It's a little sweeter, but it serves the beer well.
