Basketball Recruiting: Some Naadir Tharpe information

I just got off the phone with 2011 PG prospect Naadir Tharpe, who currently has an offer from Iowa State.

Tharpe currently plays at the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. That's the same prep school that Craig Brackins and Melvin Ejim attended.

Tharpe told me that he is "close friends" with Ejim and that they roomed together last season.

I'll have a full story up on all of this tomorrow. Tharpe, a former Providence commitment claims a slug of offers from random Big East schools.

hopefully that was a slip by Tharpe, and not a misprint by you?

Chris, I take it the ship has sailed in regards to Chasson Randle, when D-Robinson left. The new staff seems intent on taking two PGs in the next class. I hope Odunsi has a good showing in July, currently he's not a guy getting much notice by the recruiting services.

I've seen Odunsi play in person and was VERY impressed. He isn't ever going to score a lot for Iowa State but he is a great team guy and is solid defensively.

Did he remind you of a guy like JT Tiller from Mizzou? Big guard that can handle the rock and play lockdown defense, and can occasionally be a streaky scorer.

Yes but I don't really see him being a streaky scorer. He's not a very good shooter but can really get to the basket. Great passer and even better on D. His body is Big 12 ready today. Reminds me a lot of Ejim as far as that goes. Won't have to wait for him to mature physically or mentally.

Scoring for him won't really be the important thing anyway. Like you mentioned, if he can pass, handle the rock and play defense, he'll have no trouble finding playing time right away.

One concern that I do have is shooting. I just have a very brief view of that roster in my head and it severely lacks shooters...Elgin Cook is a freak athletically but doesn't shoot the ball well...neither does Odunsi. Really, none of the 2010 guys are great shooters. Chris Babb is solid so that helps. But really, that's about it. I love an athletic ball club as much as the next guy but IMO, they need to find a few guys who can knock down the long ball.

That's a great point. Maybe the staff is confident that they can turn players into good shooters...who better to teach them than one of the all-time greats in Fred Hoiberg?

But I agree with you...we need a bomber.

I don't believe in creating shooters. They can improve, alot in some cases, but I think we need to get better shooters on campus.

I mostly agree, too. But I could see bringing in someone that is not a great shooter, but is serviceable, and working with them on it.

I remember how poor of a shooter Tinsley was at first, and he really improved in his 2nd year as a Clone.
