Re: Rolen - Cubs Have A Couple Strikes Against Them

Plus, when you have so many different starting times from 1:20 to 12:05 to 7:05
So, Scott thinks that 3 different starting times is a factor in what is holding the Cubs back?

How many 12:05 home games do they play in a season? 5? 7? Maybe? And pretty much only Saturdays.

90% of the games are 1:20 or 7:05 unless it's ESPN or something.

As much as I would hate to see Wrigley Field go, I bet once/if it did go, the Cubs would have a World Series in a couple of years.

Also, I agree with Rolen on the mixture of day and night games and the Chicago nightlife. The Chicago City Council has been limiting the amount of night game the Cubs can play, although each year they give them more.

I'm just shocked there is actually a Reds fan on the board. I thought they only existed in books.

Hey, after 102 years, it is time to try something different. It seems to be stuck on losing.

Re: Rolen - Cubs Have A Couple Strikes Against Them

I don't think the wrigley is a problem it would be interesting to see what kind of start times the cubs would set if they weren't limited to the number of night games allowed by the city

Re: Rolen - Cubs Have A Couple Strikes Against Them

I'll give him the start times but the facilities is a lame reason. It hasn't kept Boston from winning some titles, the Marlins don't have the best stadium either and they've won twice recently. The ball park doesn't matter, all you need is some green grass and an infield and you can win games with a good roster. Look at all the teams with new stadiums that are still looking to make the playoffs, the Pirates come to mind and they have one of the nicest "newer" stadiums in baseball IMO.

All the day games do suck though, they've been trying to get more night games but the neighborhood there hasn't budged a whole lot because night games bring more problems there.

I would say just the opposite. I think he makes a good point with facilities. Particularly the warm up cages. And if you don't have nice ammenities, it's probably just that much more difficult to attract players - although not impossible.

I suppose I'm at a loss for why 1:20 start times 2-3 times a week is so damning? The players have to be up by about 9 or 10? It's hot?

The first and foremost reason for night games at most venues was to attract more fans. Wrigley doesn't have that problem.

I agree totally with the highlighted portion.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Not so much! But he's always been a player I respect. He plays the game the right way and is a great teammate.

Again, talent always wins. Money talks, it hasn't kept Chicago from landing players in the past they just overpaid or spent it on the wrong players usually. And the game times have more to do with taking BP than the facilities. I was just at Wrigley the other month and an usher said usually if the team has a night game or the visiting team came in the night before a day game one or both of them may not take BP before a 1:20 game but both teams get time on the field to take BP so it's not like they are constrained to a tight spot or something for that. There are batting cages under the OF bleachers too.

Its mainly because players in Chicago go out until all hours in the night, and the early rises make for some rough days. Its been a long tradition of players who have played for the Cubs. I'm sure you have seen the many pictures of Soriano clubbing it up.

The main reason the Cubs got rid of Grace was because he was such a bad influence on the younger players.

Yeah - but his point was more to the sub taking some swings before heading to the plate. Of course, that's the same for both squads. But still a fair point for an NL team. Of obviously an issue for the Cubs 81 games as opposed to other's 6-9.
