Ranking ISU's players for upcoming season.

Here's my rating of key players in order of importance
    1. Bret Meyer-has to play like two years ago
    2. Blythe-obviously key receiver
    3. Alvin Bowen LB our defensive leader
    4. JJ Bass-RB, he has to be the real deal
    5. Wallace Franklin WR if he makes it, his speed can really help
    6. Tom Schmeling-leader of OL
    7. Michael Tate DT-our pass rush?
    8. Allen Bell DB, a BIG defensive back.
    9. Zac Sandvig-DB looks like we'll be counting on him
    10. Bret Culbrenson-I hope his leg got stronger.
This is my take, interested in other perspectives......

I'm nervous if Zac Sandvig is the 9th best. Although I agree with you in the fact he will be counted on. After the top 3, it's a big crap shoot. We need Bass to be atleast good, and hopefully he can pass protect. I'm really hoping for Allen Bell to be the real deal more than anyone else. This will be the first time in a few years when I have no idea what to expect opening night from our team. It's exciting and scary at the same time.

Re: Ranking ISU's players for upcoming season.

    1. Meyer (QB is always the leader)
    2. Whole OL (know this is not one player but its hard to single out 1)
    3. Lyle (we need to get pressure on QB)
    4. Bowen (Leader on D)
    5. Blythe (would be higher but I think he is our best O player and we know what we are getting from him)
    6. Bell (need a good corner cover)
    7. James Smith (safeties stunk last year, so basically insert any safety here)
    8. Rubin (needs to help stuff the run)
    9. Bibbs (need another good LB to take pressure off Bowen)
    10. Bass (need a consistent runner who can get us 80 to 120 yds a game)

A lot of these guys are JUCO's, which is unfortunate that so much of our team relies on guys that haven't stepped on campus yet

Re: Ranking ISU's players for upcoming season.

    1. Meyer- obvious
    2. Oline- Needs to protect Meyer and holes for Bass
    3. Bass-Need someone that can get over 50 yards against the top teams in the country. Not just 100 against crappy competition.
    4. Lyle/Parker- Need a pass rush. we had no pressure last year.
    5. Smith- weve heard great things, and we dont have any depth at S.
    6. Brandtner- Field position
    7. Culbertson-Needs to continue to nail em thru.
    8. 3rd starting LB. DOnt know if its Bibbs, Garrin or who. I dont think Carper will be healthy.
    9. FB?- WHo will replace Kock on short yardage?
    10. Singleton/McDowell. Need to prove they shouldnt be picked on by the QB.

I really hope that Scales is healthy because I think he could be pretty good. If Bass is as good as advertised, I would LOVE to see Scales and Bass in the game at the same time.

Re: Ranking ISU's players for upcoming season.

I would put the ENTIRE O-Line at #1 if we're going by IMPORTANCE. That was the downfall of the entire offense last year. Doesn't matter what Bret, Todd, Or JJ can do if there isn't anyone to protect them. And 2nd I think the RB position is important too. We got a tiny bit of good running from Kock towards the end of last year, but Stevie Hicks was an overall disappointment in his career. We were so used to being spoiled at that position with Troy Davis and Darren Davis...If we had a good running game to set up the pass to our STUD WR's, we would be friggin' unstoppable with the ball.
Third would be the defensive backs. I really really wanna see what Allen Bell is all about.

Re: Ranking ISU's players for upcoming season.

I know the O-line has not been good the last couple of season's, but do you all think that some variations in the playcalling could help?

I mean almost everytime Meyer dropped back for a pass, there was some sort of fake or playaction almost every time that was unneccesary. I was calling for some time to have 2 and 3 step drops for passes and people thought I was a fool for that. Let your stud receivers make plays after the catch.

I also think variation in the running game will help. My guess is ISU will use the stretch play a little bit and allow an RB the chance to find a whole and then try to get through it. The previous regime was up the middle all the time and the option play seemed like the only time a running play was meant to go outside. Based on what I saw in the spring game, there were a few stretch plays and I actually saw the O-line getting after things during the play. They were actually moving downfield looking for a block!

The o-line is a big question, but I really think some playcalling with just a tad of creativity will help the offense out a lot!
