    2006-07 Basketball Attendance

I remember an argument over Iowa and Iowa State's basketball attendance in the past season, specifically Iowa making it into the top 25 in attendance, and Iowa State barely being snubbed by being placed in the top 26.

Considering the year we had; very, very, surprising numbers.

I think that attendance last season was really good when you consider you are starting over with a new coach and with all of the players leaving the program for various and sundry reasons.

Texas A&M and Missouri should be absolutely embarrassed by their attendance. Baylor . . . well, Baylor is Baylor.

These schools really drove down the average for the B12.

    Look at Creigton. Wow.

And why the heck was A & M lower then us when they had a top 20 team all year?

    Re: 2006-07 Basketball Attendance

That is a facinating fact sheet. It's interesting the Missouri Valley is #8 and almost matches the Pac 10 in average attendance.

Also the Big 10 leads in overall attendance which surprises me a bit. I figured the ACC or Big East might be ahead of them. Also the SEC is #2?

That doesn't make sense at all! Their arena holds a little more than 12,000 seats, there's no reason they should be 3000 below their full capacity. I guess they really are just a football school.

    Re: 2006-07 Basketball Attendance

I did a little look-see to find out teams' records as they relate to attendance:

    1. Kentucky 22-12
    2. Syracuse 24-11
    3. North Carolina 31-7
    4. Tennessee 24-11
    5. Louisville 24-10
    6. Ohio State 35-4
    7. Wisconsin 30-6
    8. Maryland 25-9
    9. Arkansas 21-14
    10. Illinois 23-12
    11. Indiana 21-11
    12. Kansas 33-5
    13. Creighton 22-11
    14. Marquette 24-10
    15. Michigan State 23-12
    16. Memphis 33-4
    17. Arizona 20-11
    18. NC State 20-16
    19. Virginia 21-11
    20. Connecticut 17-14
    21. Oklahoma State 22-13
    22. Texas 25-10
    23. New Mexico 15-17
    24. South Carolina 14-16
    25. Iowa State 15-16
    26. Kansas State 23-12
    27. Alabama 20-12
    28. Dayton 19-12
    29. Iowa 17-14
    30. BYU 25-9

South Carolina, ISU, and New Mexico seem to be the three anomalies in an otherwise flattering list of big names.

    Re: 2006-07 Basketball Attendance

A couple of things. I am pretty sure that the NCAA tracks paid attendance rather than actual attendance. I go to the LSU games and they averaged about 6,000 in actual attendance even though the paid attendance averaged over 10,000. Yes, Duke plays in a very small gym (it is a gym...not an arena)...and I would bet that their paid and actual attendance is one in the same. Yes, A&M has a smaller arena but attendance is lower because A&M is a FOOTBALL SCHOOL...they don't really care about basketball!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

It is really small for a major program like that. Tougher than nails to get tickets too I hear. Just 9315 seating capacity. Drake's Knapp Center holds just over 7000 I believe so really Duke's arena is not too much bigger.

    Re: 2006-07 Basketball Attendance

When you look at those numbers you see that Kentucky, UNC, and Syracuse top the list because of the size of their arenas or domes. It would be interesting if the NCAA would add a column and figure the attendance avg and compare it with the capacity of the arena.

Schools like Duke and others who have smaller capacity's would jump to the top of the list because they sell out the place.
