    what am I missing

I have been a member of Cyclone Fanatic since almost the beginning. I don't post a lot, rather I enjoy reading what others have to say. But there is one thing I have been wondering lately. My favorite thing to read about is Men's Basketball recruiting. I am wondering why there are so many people out there who say things like, "we don't have a chance with this kid" or "he won't come here" when discussing some of the top players in the country. If that were true, how did we land Brackins? How were we able to go into Wisconsin and get arguably their best player in Garrett who would probably have more stars if he committed to some other school? I love seeing Iowa State under schools being considered. How can we expect others to take us seriously and respect us when we don't ourselves? Let's not sell our new coaching staff short.

    Re: what am I missing

I posted some similar thoughts in another thread. McDermott has managed to get on the top 5 list of a lot of high profile kids, and he doesn't seem to be afraid to go against the big dogs. He will get some of them, and miss on others. You don't need to have 3 or 4 five star players every class, if you can get one or so a year, and know how to coach.

    Re: what am I missing

Personally, I think it was amazing we were able to get this quality of a recruiting class with the kind of year we had last year. Granted, we may not be able to reel in those five star recruits in the near future (or will we? hmm..)... they will start to come as the team improves.

Oh don't get too down in the dumps. You have to take most of what is said on this site with a grain of salt. Not many posters are on Mcdermotts staff so no one really knows what's going on.

Good points. We've done very well recruiting when you consider the huge swings our basketball program has gone through the last few years.

    Re: what am I missing

Well, our last two seasons we are 31-30 overall. That's not exactly great material to attract big time prospects. With that being what it is, I'm absolutely stoked for this class McD & Co. have put together.

    Re: what am I missing

I think that a new practice facility would really be an asset to recruiting. We're lagging behind in that area and need to break ground next summer at the latest.

What is the quickest that the practice facility can be built under best-case scenario? Anyone know? You know, fund raising, construction, etc... I imagine we can't expect to see one in the next 2 years.

    Re: what am I missing

I never for a second believe that ISU CANNOT get a big name in basketball...Iowa State has some good history with basketball recruiting. "Hilton Magic" is a great selling point to kids. I get more worried about football recruiting. Which I believe SHOULD increase now that Chizik is here AND we should see drastic year-to-year improvement once the stadium gets its renovations.

With the exception of a few programs, the primary reason players choose a school is the coach. Certainly facilities and environment are important, but the most important recruiting tool is the head coach. MickeyD has passed the first test in building a quality program, and I'm optimistic he'll continue.

I would say McD has passed the test on ability to recruit but I disagree that he has built a quality program. I know he hasn't hand much time, but when i refer to a quality program it isn't a sub .500 team with the amount of player turnover we've had. Now i'm not saying we won't be a quality team in the very near future. I just can't realistically say we are there right now.

    Re: what am I missing

He needs to sell the fact that it is in fact possible to win a national championship at Iowa State, as we were damn close in 2000. Add in the fact that you look at a guy like Fizer, who was picked fourth out of ISU, and it can be a place to develop as a pro. Third, if you're good here, you can be a freakin hero.

Very true assessment, instead of a frustrating Iowa stereotype, this point he singled out would fall into a Iowa State stereotype. You see it in football and basketball.

How much do each one of us contribute to it??

    Re: what am I missing

A line from old Maury White: "A little bit about a lot of things"
There a are a lot of successful programs with lesser facilities than ISU. We have, it seems a solid class of commitments the next few years. An exceptional practice facility would be icing on the cake. Patience can always wear thin after the honeymoon. ISU is still rebuilding. The core and nucleus are still being formed in this program. Maybe a raise for Gmac is in order with a few home upsets or an undefeated home season? Tickets would be a hot commodity if we would win all non conference and then the first two conference games. Let me haveit.

I am one who has often posted comments about players we have little or no chance with, and when I do I am in no way selling this coaching staff short. I can assure you that I am a huge fan of this staff. It's also not a matter of not taking ISU basketball seriously. It's really a matter of simply being honest. When I have posted things like that, it is because I have heard it from a reliable source, not because I am trying to disrespect anyone. I have also posted good news such as when Garrett and Brackins first committed. I guess the real question is, would you prefer if users with reasonably good sources provide reliable information or would you prefer they just post "happy news"?

    Just curious.
