    New Futuramas?

Has anyone seen the new episodes of Futurama? I've yet to see them, but a couple friends have been saying they've been disappointed with them. Just wondering what anyone else thought?

    Re: New Futuramas?

Haven't seen tonight's episode, but I have seen the previous two, and thought they were great. Some really good jokes.

For some reason the Zapp Branigan line "Mr. President, What the hell?" had me in stitches. His delivery was awesome.

Billy West is just plain amazing.

    Re: New Futuramas?

I certainly have not been disappointed. I imagined it would be a little slow getting off the ground (which it has been) but disappointing is far too strong.

The part about processing the "e-waste" in the "third-world" was hilarious bread-and-butter Futurama humor.

I agree. Not the best Futurama I've ever seen. But it is far from disappointing.

Humor seems to be a little more on the mature side then previous seasons IMO.

I agree. The Rebirth episode was a little slow, but it had a distinctly Futurama-esque layered plot which I really enjoy. I love it when they tease the viewer with a deus ex machina type situation but then go in an entirely different direction.

For example, in the first episode, when Leela was in a coma, and Fry made a robot version of her with all of her memories and traits, it would have been an easy escape for the plot to return things back to normalcy, because essentially Leela's character was back, even though it really wasn't her. But, not only did that eventuality not come to fruition, but they even added another layer to the plot. They even put in some clues as to the real direction of the episode that become obvious when the episode is viewed a second time. They did something similar in the episode "The Sting." Not many 30 minute sitcoms would be capable of doing this, or even want to if they could, but it's something that I really appreciate out of the writers.

I realize this may be a little too in depth, but Futurama is easily my favorite television show, and I've been looking forward to the continuation of the series for a long time.

    Re: New Futuramas?

I figured it would take them awhile to find their groove again. The only thing they've done in a long time have been the straight-to-DVD-movies, and those, while entertaining, did not have the same pacing to them and some "mostly Bender's Big Score" were mostly giant send-ups to fans of the show.

It's like when Family Guy came back. The first few episodes right when they came back weren't all that great and then they got their momentum back and got back to being the show people missed in the first place.

    Re: New Futuramas?

There is no such thing as a bad episode of Futurama -- some are simply better than others.

My favorite line from any of the Futuramas comes, of course, from Zap Branigan in Amazon Women in the Mood, when the land on a planet with the amazon women and they get sentenced to death by snu-snu.

After a couple of rounds, Branigan comes out of the hut and says something like, "Stop. Stop. The spirit is willing but the flesh is soft and spongy."

"We need rest. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised." is the quote. That's a great episode.

One of the other great lines in that episode is the exchange between Bender and the Amazons after the femputer has sentenced all the men to death:

    Femputer- "The men must die."

Bender- "Too true, Femputer. You're so wise. Kill 'em all, I say. Good riddance! Did I mention I'm not a man? I'm a manbot. It's an understandable mistake. You can let me down now, thanks."

Amazon- "He big jerk like man."

Bender- "I sure am. But check the crotch. Nothing."

Pretty much any line from Zapp Branigan is awesome.

They say country music speaks to the heart. Unfortunately, it has to go through your ears to get there.

I bow to your Futurama expertise. I'm not worthy.

Wasn't this particular episode named one of the funniest as well?

Any who, I like Futurama and glad it is back.

That's how I took it too. Something like that isn't like flipping a switch. The writers all have to start moving in the same direction again after a multi-year hiatus.

Not to mention the pressure to meet expectations right off the bat. That does not create a good environment for being inspiredly funny right off the bat.
