Time to Blow Up the Cubs!

Seriously, how can the Ricketts keep a team together that is 3-9 against the lowly Pirates this year? Time to blow up the team and start the youth movement. There is NO way you can justify keeping this thing together as it is now so the Cubs have to be sellers now you'd think. Anyone not named Castro, Colvin, Cashner, and Marmol they should be open to listen to offers for. If Lilly is somehow still on this team at the end of the month Hendry might as well be fired on the spot as there are all kinds of contenders that will be in the market for Lilly I'm sure and he should bring a decent return back.

I think they are open to listen, but what do they realisticly have that anyone would want outside of Lilly?

Nothing unless they're willing to eat a ton of contract.

I agree. They need to bring in some players with confidence. Get Brenly out of the booth and into the dugout as well. Let Lou retire.

I thought they blew up awhile back.

Now Derek, ZMan, Sorriano, and Aramis are struggling to finish the year.

Oh, you mean trade away the key non performing for the buck pieces... Who are these players?

You will not see many people moved from the Cubs, mainly because of the contracts.

The Cubs have all the pieces in place to make a run...for some reason they can not figure out how to hit the ball and score runs. Its hard to understand, but they have the players who should be hitting and scoring runs.

My optimistic side thinks they still have a run left in them yet this year, but that optimism is running very thin.

I hate to say it, but I think they have all the pieces in place to make a run, if this was about 2003. Soriano, Lee and Aramis are all getting old are and are a shell of their old selfs. Byrd is the only guy who hits with any consistancy. I just don't see the run support coming.

Re: Time to Blow Up the Cubs!

Blow 'em up and start over (as much as possible). There have to be some contenders who would be willing to look at Silva (as long as he is still pitching well - TRADE HIM SOON!), Lilly, Zambrano (headcase yes, and the Cubs would have to eat salary), Dempster, Lee, Soriano (AL DH?), or Ramirez. I'm not saying they are likely to be traded, just that some contending teams will be willing to at least take a look at them. If the Cubs have to eat salary for a while just to clear the books a little earlier than if they kept the players, let it be so.

With that being said, I think the only realistic trade opportunities are going to be for Lilly or Silva. I think Fukudome, Zambrano, Lee, Soriano, and Ramirez are all going to be on the Cubs' books until their contracts are up.

Keepers - Colvin, Cashner, Marmol, Castro, Marshall. Marlon Byrd, too.

I'm exactly where you are. We have guys that could make one more run, but it's really difficult to see them doing it at this late stage in the game (unless they've been talking to the Astros on how to play a 2-3 month season and tear things up).

But if they decide it's time to blow the roster up and do what it takes to move on, that doesn't sound like a bad idea.

They would like to be sellers, but they don't have anything anyone wants.

Re: Time to Blow Up the Cubs!

I think Lee could be traded to a contender, he is a free agent after this season so he doesn't have a long term contract to worry about. Same thing with Nady. Hopefully someone will kick the tires on Zambrano and I think the Cubs could almost eat some of his and Fukudome's contracts if they can find someone willing to take on a portion of them. Theriot is pretty cheap at the moment but is arbitration eligible again this offseason. And like someone mentioned, if you can find anyone willing to trade for Silva while he's still pitching well you do it.

You'd probably have to move mountains to find someone to take Soriano obviously. But I think if Hendry is willing to listen to offers that would include the Cubs taking back a bad contract or possibly sending some money to pay for portions of a bad contract you have to consider it. Soriano makes about 18 mil a year right? What if someone offers to take him if the Cubs pay $10 mil of that, essentially you save $8 mil a year on his contract and you clear room for some of the young outfielders in the system to start every day. Fukudome only has 1 more season left and same thing with him, if you can find someone willing to take on say 1/2 of his contract it's worth it in savings instead of keeping an under-performing player around that is hindering the development of some guys that could be playing right now.

He keeps addressing the same issues with the reporters. It has to be depressing managing this team.

I can't for the life of me figure out why he still has Ramirez hitting cleanup when he is batting .179. He keeps moving anyone who has hit around and keeps the guys who are struggling in the same spots. Zero fun to watch this team play.
