    ISU football: Notable unexpected moments

What are some of your favorite ISU football memories when the result of a game (or a season) exceeded your expectation, a positive result that seemed to come out of the blue based on what you thought was realistic at the time?
Consider each in its original context — don’t downgrade it because what followed “negated” it or because the team ISU beat wasn’t really all that good; and such.
    A few of mine:
    ISU 7, OU 7 (1981)
    ISU 19, Nebraska 10 (1992)
    ISU 27, Iowa 9 (1998)
    ISU 36, Nebraska 14 (2002)
    ISU 37, @KSU 23 (2004)
    2005 season
    ISU 42, @Texas A&M 14 (2005)
    ISU 9, at NU 7 (2009)

Re: ISU football: Notable unexpected moments

Walking past Beardshear, looking across the lawn to Curtiss, and seeing the huge banner congratulating ISU on an 8-3 season. Then after the bowl game the 8 was crossed out and a 9 was written in. Growing up in Ames and being a diehard since I was just a few years old, I had never thought it would be possible for ISU to have an 8/9-3 season. That was just a great moment for me.

Re: ISU football: Notable unexpected moments

I actually think the entire 2005 season, as a whole, was a HUGE disappointment. That team could have legitimately been 11-0 in the regular season, lost to Texas in the Big 12 title, and get an at-large BCS bid.

The Nebraska games in both 2004 and 2009 were great unexpected moments for me. It was when you realized this team which you had no expectations for pre-season was on the cusp of putting together a good season, and where you had expected rebuilding and frustration, it was fun again.

Re: ISU football: Notable unexpected moments

1992 nebraska game, i was 9 and we were driving home from the mall listening to the game and I was in complete shock that we won. The next time we won in 02 or so and Hobbs ran into the stands right where we were and high fived everyone. When Big Play got that interception and ran it into the endzone to basically win the game...cant remember who we were playing but it was a night game and I literally (literally) **** myself from screaming and jumping up and down as he past us. Does anyone have a clip of that play?

This. 2004 was the surprise season (especially coming off the 2-10 2003 campaign), 2005 was an outright fail. The only "excusable" loss that season was at Nebraska, but I use HEAVY quotes on that because we led that game 13-10 going into the 4th quarter and opened up overtime with a touchdown. Yet another game we ****** down our legs that season. 2005 could have been the single greatest season in the history of ISU Football, and instead it was what got the "Fire Mac" ball rolling (and in a hindsight 20/20 aspect, deservedly so).

Nebraska 2009 is #1 for me, but I would add Iowa 2002 to the list, primarily because of the halftime deficit.

I have to go to 2002 Iowa game as ISU was down 17 at the half, and then having Seneca Wallace lead the Cyclones back. It also helps that I was at Kinnick to see that game.

Re: ISU football: Notable unexpected moments

2004 and 2009 seasons. Iowa in 98 and the second half of Iowa in 2002. A&M 2005. Nebraska 92, I wouldn't say Nebraska in 2002 because we were rated higher. Also I wouldn't put NU 2009 version either because Nebby had a couple of losses, one by a lot, heading into that game. Heading into that game I didn't think NU would be as good at the end of the season as they were.

Two games that come to mind

    1. Last year against at NU
    2. 2004 against at K State- ISU came out of nowhere in the 4th and stole that one. I was so use to having that happen to us that it was a breath of fresh air.

IF you are looking at when it happened, I'd say Colorado in, I think, 05, when Curvey picked that pass off and rumbled the distance. There's no way I saw Danny boy leading us to ANOTHER let down against KU, and thus I thought the unthinkable had happened, ISU in the Big 12 Championship game.

    2002 Win over EIU

2000 was an unexpected surprise too. I remember sitting in my OB class in the beginning of the semester before the season began and the professor asked my classmates, who happened to be one of the captains "let's be honest, from the organizational perspective, why our football team can't be said as 'successful' ?"
