    Ledges State Park?

Anyone ever gone hiking here? I was looking for anywhere decent to go hiking/look at scenery in Iowa...

Been there many times. It is probably one of the most scenic state parks in Iowa for hiking. Very different scenery then you will be accustomed to.

Only downside is that none of the trails are very long.

Haven't been around the Boone area lately, but it might be flooded right now, so I'd definitely check on that, but otherwise it's a great place to look around.

I'm sure it's flooded right now, but it's a very pretty park.

Backbone, up by Manchester is probably the best scenery in the State.

Yep good point. The lower road is closed due to flooding. I think this is only for vehicles though so you can probably still hike from the top area....

Yes, I believe 30 was closed over near Boone for a bit earlier this week (although I could be wrong). Usually they close Ledges to cars if there is much flooding (just because there are the two places where water goes over the road even when it's not flooding), so I'd guess you'll probably be walking in.

Thats funny.I agree with your main point that its differrent.... but it is far from
    the most scenic.
For someone looking for good-scenic- hiking trails in Iowa...you should first check out just off the top of my head.....

    Backbone
    Effigy Mounds
    Maquekota Caves
    Mines of Spain
    Pikes Peak-maybe the best
    Pony Hollow
    Volga river State Park
    Yellow River

Just giving a fellow hiker a heads up on where to go.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I will have to check some of these out, thanks.

We are vacationing Minnesota this year as we are starting to become convinced nowhere in Iowa holds a candle to the average park up there. Desperately looking for some Iowa parks with scenery that are worth the two or three hours of travel to get there.

Ledges is good for a convenient drive and a day of hiking but the scenery is nothing special. IMHO.

North East Iowa (where most of those parks listed are) is virtually the same as Minnesota, scenery wise. The Minnesota parks are nicer in terms of amentities, but scenery, except for the North Shore (which is unlike anything Iowa has to offer), is pretty much the same.

    Re: Ledges State Park?

I camped at Yellow River last summer. The isolation was awesome. First time I hiked down the face of a cliff - mental note : don't let 10 year old nephew be pathfinder...

I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Most scenic in CENTRAL Iowa. Hard to compare Northeast IA (or the Loess hills in Western IA) to the rest of the state as the geology there is very unique.

Try hiking some of the trails with a seven year old on your back. They seem long then
