ISU ASSISTANT WRESTLING COACH CHRIS BONO RESIGNS

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State assistant wrestling coach Chris Bono announced Wednesday that he is resigning his position to pursue opportunities inside and outside the wrestling community.

“I have been in wrestling a long time,” Bono said. “I am looking at options and considering what is best for my family. They are my first priority.”

Bono just completed the first season of his second stint as an assistant coach for the Iowa State wrestling team. He had been head coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga for three previous seasons (2006-09).

What's the reasoning here? Why did you see it coming?

This is an assumption, but I would assume it is related to salary. He is pretty well known and could probably market himself for greater compensation than an assistant wrestling coach makes. He had a great career after college but maybe now it is time to step away from the sport to provide for his family...

Too bad for us. Guy is a cyclone legend and a great ambassador for the sport.

would not be surprised if he felt like he should be the head coach.

If that was the case, why leave your head coaching job to take on an asst coaching position? that doesn't make sense.

Bono will be missed, yet good luck to him and his family in the future no matter what they decide to do.

Re: ISU ASSISTANT WRESTLING COACH CHRIS BONO RESIGNS

This is terrible news. Bono was a great guy, and a blast for Cyclone fans to hang with. He seemed so excited about Cyclone wrestling and the recruits they were involved with.
I think something's seriously amiss with the wrestling program.

I think when you suddenly up and quit your $80,0000/yr. coaching job, with nothing certain lined up (as far as I know), and with a wife and kids to support, it says there are issues within the program.
