Nigerian President says no to international play

World Cup 2010: Nigerian president suspends team after poor showing | Football | The Guardian

They definitely take soccer seriously in other countries.
Poor performance, "humiliating exit" = Unable to play internationally for two years

If this goes through, expect a ban from FIFA. They really don't like governmental interference.

Re: Nigerian President says no to international play

Nothing new. If I'm correct, the government detained the entire team for a week after they failed to perform in the African Nations cup several years ago. I could be wrong that it's another African country. But that's how it works: the politicians use soccer to distract the citizens from the real issues.

I don't want to know what will happen to the north korea national team players though, I can imagine that their dear leader will not be happy about losing 0-7.

Re: Nigerian President says no to international play

So basically the Nigerian president wants to GUARANTEE that Nigeria humiliates themselves in World Cup 2014, if they are even able to make it that far...

Re: Nigerian President says no to international play

Nigeria's problem is they use a different team for qualifying than they use for playing the world cup matches. They have a bunch of pro's that do not have the passion that the qualifying team had.
