Playing Big 12 South Teams Every Year

I know we don't have a very good record against the south, but I think that might be partially due to the fact that we don't have to deal with them every year. I think we will become much more familiar with the players, coaches, and their tendencies when we have to play them on a yearly basis. I think this will help us be able to compete with them much better than with the 2 years on 2 years off scheduling now.

Am I crazy? What is everyone elses thought?

Re: Playing Big 12 South Teams Every Year

let's make them chew on it this year and be competitive..... that is, I think we need to take down Tech at least this season. (from the south) If we can get to 6-7 wins....and a bowl victory... CPR will have gained a lot of respect, thus helping ISU recruiting wise. This is a big-big year for us. If we can show this type of play with this coach.....we will start getting some of the "better" Texas talent...etc...

Let's make TT our rival game - a full out offensive affair.

I do think that TT is a team that we need to beat. If we want to get to the upper level bowl games, its the mid-level teams that we absolutely have to beat. I would throw OSU in the same level.

Playing them every year takes away the awe factor. They are a little more beatable if you see them every year as opposed to a huge gap between playing somewhere. Its a mental thing.

Re: Playing Big 12 South Teams Every Year

I agree to a point. Texas and OU will obviously have more talent than us so familiarity might not help us much.
Now I think it will help us much more against TTech, ATM, OSU, and Baylor. The talent differential is not insurmountable against those teams and knowing their players, tendencies, and schemes better should help some. We also get to play them whether they are up or down in talent and take advantage of any coaching changes and such.

I think playing them every year also opens more doors for recruitng. You can assure recruits multiple games in the south every year, including 2 in Texas.

Agree. Its safe to assume at least 2 games in Texas and 1 game in Oklahoma every year. Not to mention that now every B12 conference game will be on TV so exposure in Texas will increase as well.

Re: Playing Big 12 South Teams Every Year

Our winning % against the South is 24% since formation of the B12. It's 25% against Neb/Col in that same time period.

The problem is the extra BCS opponent every year.

I don't think TT will have the same offensive prowess that they did under Leach. He was an offensive genious and Tuberville is more of a defensive minded guy.

I thought that Tuberville kept the OC under Leach on his staff, in order to preserve the offensive system in place. Sort of a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type thing. I don't know how much Leach's OC actually did during gameday, but no doubt he would know the offense.

I don't think Tech will drop off much from previous years. It's not like Tuberville doesn't have experience. If they improve their defense, they will be a pretty good team.

Re: Playing Big 12 South Teams Every Year

Just curious (and Lazy), I know we've never beaten Texas, only beaten TT once, and A&M once as well right? I think its going to be a long time before we're on the same level as those teams if we ever can but I really like the idea of PR's 3rd and 4th year teams being able to hang in there with those guys. IMO thats when we'll see the real progress of this coaching staff, until then I hope PR and his guys continue to make even bigger strides than even the most loyal Cyclone fans envision.

I think he pretty much cleared house when he came in. The new OC is Neal Brown who came over from Troy.
