    A Couple Things on Recruiting

I got slammed into the office today since there is no secretary. So, since I ran out of productive things to do, I took a look at our offers.

I noticed these two things right away:

Most of our OOS offers have gone to guys with very impressive offer lists. I love that. Don't settle for the easy gets. Go after the big guys. Now, there is another side to that where you know there isn't a chance. Don't waste time there and it doesn't seem they have. I like how we are recruiting and I think we will get some pretty impressive recruits.

The other thing I noticed is that we have offered a bunch of big OLBs. I don't know for sure but it is reasonable to think the goal here is to move these guys to DE. 6'1 is definitely big enough to play DE here. Also there are some big DEs on the list.

I wonder if recruiters from rival conferences are using the recent tormoil against Big 12(10) member schools:

DE or DT. Iowa has done this for years. Binns, Klug, King, Kroul were all high school LBs. Most were slower LBs that were destined for the DL. I think Binnns was actually recruited as a DE

Yes, most of the top tier programs have done this for years. Historically, we haven't.

    Not true.

It doesn't matter what facts are out there. Other coaches are not reading the Des Moines Register or other big 12 news sources to see what's going on. I'm sure there are coaches out there telling kids a bunch of lies regarding the health of our conference.

What is forcing the other members schools to honor this contract? Penalties? Didn't slow down Colorado & Nebraska. I think if schools want out bad enough in the future, they'll leave. I'm pretty sure Texas would bolt if they felt they could get a better situation.

How many times are people going to post this same pessimistic outlook before they realize it's been beaten to death already.

Right now is probably the time to put out some feelers for guys that may be perceived as "out of reach" for the ISU FB program. Take a shot and see if they can reel a couple in over the summer. Its not like signing day is anytime soon.

Miss out on those guys....still have 7 months left to work with.

Re: A Couple Things on Recruiting

We are definitely treading the fine line between offering too many no-hope guys and offering just enough so that we still have time and resources to spend up on recruits that have a legit chance at coming. I'm okay with where we are now, but we shouldn't be offering more than a few of those longshots a year, IMO.

Re: A Couple Things on Recruiting

I also wonder how much of the "offering" is used to build relationships with certain HS coaches for future reference?

Where did you find the offer list? I wanna see that, it seems like it'd be interesting to read.

    Thanks.
