    Venture Capital in DSM Area?

Hello, not sure if anyone has any ideas on this at all, but have been searching for a good venture capital firm to run an idea by for about the past three weeks. I've come to a point in my life when I have finally decided that I need to go forward with my dreams so I decided to act. I've been in contact with a few investors already but didn't get a good feel for them. Heck, one gentleman I spoke to who's company shall remain nameless flat out told me that he knew a place in town to get exotic prostitutes! What a sick, sick man.

Anyway I was thinking that someone out there in Cyclone-land may know someone in this business, heck a former ISU-er would be perfect. Thanks in advance.

Good one. I'm actually looking for someone that specializes in technology.

Try Equity Dynamics out of DM. If you ever need to work with ISU on some collaborative research (product development, product testing, prototyping, quality assurance, LEAN, plant set-up), IM me. They have programs set up to assist Iowa companies.

Actually, if you are serious about starting your own company, I'd suggest meeting with people at the Pappajohn Center in the ISU Research Park. They have staff that can offer business advice plus they have connections to VC people.

Just some advice from someone who is in tech space in Iowa. Start small, get money from friends and family, prove your product, get recurring revenue and customers. THEN present in front of the VC guys. The last thing they will let you do is present a pipe-dream idea with no solid footing (aka revenue/sales)

Thanks for the "advice" but I think I will live my life and go for my dreams my own way. To be honest, I'm a bit offended by your "pipe-dream" comment. I guess your name says it all though.

Frak and Lastplace are correct. Get w/the Papajohn Center and they will help to move the idea forward. There are also people who are connected to the center willing to help fund upstarts. If you can show success, then you are apt to get more $ for your idea and get it off the ground quicker. VC's are reluctant (especially right now) to completely fund concepts.

You don't need to take it personally. You would be SHOCKED how many people try to do exactly what you are doing, "I need to get in front of a VC with my idea". Well, the hard fact, is that VC's don't just throw money around at "ideas". Do you have the technology finished? Do you have any customers? Sales/Revenue? If you do, then by all means attempt to get in front of a VC. You didn't provide a whole lot of details, so I am assuming that you don't have those things in place.

That is why there are many angel or seed funding prospects in Iowa. Just go here for more information: Angel Group | VentureNet Iowa

Not trying to be negative here; and I wish you the best of luck. Go after your dream, I am just trying to give you some feedback on how to tackle this process.

Well you havent exactly said what your idea is. I get that those sorts of things are supposed to be secret, but in this economy, the last thing a capitalists needs or wants is another unproven product/business to fail. You never really gave any background, just sort of showed up and popped the question. From the sounds of it, it sounds like you woke up one morning and thought, "lets start my own business. step one, venture capitalist." Its nothing to be offended about.

Of course I do, I'm not a moron. Knowledge is POWER. I won't use it but I never knew when it would come in handy. Looks like it is already paying off, hey Phyllis? I'm not sure if the escorts would be into other ladies, like yourself, but it wouldn't hurt if you asked I guess.

Better get some thicker skin quick, if you are looking to "sell" to investors expect negative feedback and comments. If someone is willing to put money into your idea they are going to want results, which includes changing the product or modifing the marketing strategy.

There are two things that you need to know about me....1) I do EVERYTHING with my cowboy boots on and 2) I've got the skin of an old komodo dragon. Tough, leathery and filled with poisonous bacteria laden blood.

I can take negative feedback and constructive criticism, trust me, and I always deliver results.

Did you go to Iowa State or are you a student at Iowa State ? If so, try Professor Howard van Auken - from College of Business. He might know a lot of contact as a professor who teaches entrepreneurship.
I used to take a similar class with the late Max Wortmann - and Max knew tons a of people. I assume Dr. Van Auken does too
