    Question about USC

    Quick question...

If USC goes 12-0 this season, regardless, they won't go to a bowl game. But, can they be ranked in the AP Poll? If they can, can they finish the season ranked #1, winning them a national championship?

If they can be ranked, then they can technically be ranked #1.

If this were possible, it would be an unlikely scenario, yes, but if the season were to play out like it did in 2007- where no team had less than 2 losses... leaving a lone 12-0 USC.

Obviously they won't be in a bowl game, but I could still see them being ranked #1-- because that shouldn't affect who is the best team in the country.

    Re: Question about USC

They certainly could be ranked by the AP. I don't know that the AP would put them #1, even at 12-0.

In 1993, Auburn finished 11-0 while under sanctions (no bowl game). The AP ranked them 4th in the final poll, while the USA Today/coaches poll had them unranked.

In 1994, they finished 9-1-1 (still no bowl game). Ended up 9th AP, NR coaches.

    Re: Question about USC

I guess it depends on how you define a national champion - is the AP number 1 a national champion? What about the BCS champion? What about the coaches poll number 1? Are there three college football champions? Keep in mind there is no NCAA college football championship. If I started the Besserheimerphat College Football Ranking and said ISU was number 1 at the end of the year, does that make the Cyclones champions?

    Re: Question about USC

It happened in 1974. Oklahoma had a bowl ban by the NCAA for that year, but they finished the season unbeaten and when Alabama lost to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, OU was the only undefeated team left and was voted #1 by the AP.

The BCS champion is determined by the USA Today Coaches poll & the Harris poll. The AP withdrew from BCS formula a few years ago. The AP pollsters could vote for someone other than the winner of the BCS Championship, but I can't think of any recent examples since the BCS started.

That's actually easy - 2003 the BCS champion was LSU, the AP champion was USC.

If it isn't the BCS recognized champion then most people don't even care. I hope USC suffers under these penalties and their program goes into a dramatic decline. Those cheating sons of ******* deserve nothing less.

If you guys really think 2 years is going to hurt them you are mistaken. One class has already committed so they are in. The next class will only miss out on one year and actually could miss nothing if they redshirt. Besides, not many USC kids go to play right away. They go for their last two years.

    Or so I have read.

I don't think it's the two years that's going to hurt them - I think it's the two years ON TOP of the hiring of Lane Kiffin that's going to kill USC football. The guy has proven ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in terms of the ability to be a head coach and yet everyone seems to want to hand the kid the keys to the Ferrari. Ok, granted - neither Oakland nor Tennessee were much of Ferraris, and in fact the USC program has seen better days. But do you really think Lane Kiffin (as unproven and unworthy of a coach because of it as I think he is) would have left Tennessee for USC if he knew USC was going to get the closest thing to a death penalty and college program has seen in years? I don't think so.

And one other thing - it wasn't much more than a decade ago that Petros Papadikis (from the PMS Show on Fox Sports Radio) was "the best running back to play for the worst ever USC football team" (paraphrased)...
