    Re: Cap City tonight

I went for the first time (this year) tonight. I saw about 10 minutes of the 1st game, a lot of the second game, and not quite ten minutes of the third. Here are my thoughts:

Ejim--wow, he has a Big 12 body right now! I didn't see a lot of offensive moves out of him, but he seems to be pretty active so he got a lot of garbage points.

DG--same as last year. He was pretty grumpy/intense tonight. I saw him get to the rim a couple times but he couldn't quite get it finished.

Bubu--he reminds me of a short Mike Taylor in that he has a motor that keeps going and going and going. I really like his energy level. It is just too bad he isn't bigger. I expect him to get more than just walk-on mop-up minutes. Maybe at least as a spark off the bench.

Jake--Just about the opposite of Bubu when it came to energy and effort. But it is the CCL, so he probably wasn't too excited to be there. He spent a lot of time camped out around the 3 line. I saw him make a couple, but he didn't really stand out to me. He may turn out to be a fine player, but he just didn't seem into it tonight.

Babb--He is a really strong shooter and his build is kind of lanky. He stood out more than Jake.

Phillips--He doesn't have a great basketball body. He is pretty stocky and I don't think he is much of a leaper. But I was impressed with how he got to the rim. He reminded me a little of Stinson. Not as talented as Stinson, but he seemed like he was a bruiser going to the lane. He did a good job finishing once he got there. He might not be a bad player.

Lamb--nice kid. Nice 3 point shot. But he does not have a Big 12 body and I don't expect to see him play unless it is mop-up duty.

Scotty and JVB were MIA tonight. So was McKnight, Godfrey, and Railey. I think they are supposed to come in July.

I only saw the last 10 minutes of the second game, but Jake completely dominated it. He drove strong, finished very well and had some nice dimes. He also hit a smooth PULL UP three (boy have we missed that capability). He probably had 12 points in the ten minutes I was there.

Last Wednesday, Ejim played with fire and intensity, most likely because Babb was guarding him and essentially having a scoring contest against him. In that game, Ejim's three looked smooth and easy. Tonight, he seemed scared to shoot the three. Maybe he lifted legs earlier in the day and didn't have his legs, but it seemed so different than Wednesday. He did attack the rim well, and he had some nice spin / reverse dribble moves as well as some nice hesitation / change of pace moves. Bottom line, if he develops better handles and finishing skills, he has the potential ... (oh wait, I don't want to be accused of over-hyping, so, I will leave it at that).

Demarcus does remind me a little of Stinson. He is strong, quick, has a good cross-over and creative moves to help him get into the lane. I am not sure he has quite as strong finishing ability as Stinson, but his three point shot seems much more natural than Stinson's.

All I can say is that we should have a lot more options at the 1-3 than we have had in the past. 4-5, well, we'll have to wait and see if any of the new guys can make an impact. Ejim probably could / will play some 4, but I think he is more of a 3 long term / at the next . . . .

Scotty and JVB are in Wisconson doing a BB camp. Also heard (from an ISU player) that all players should be in Ames for second session of summer classes and that they may be playing in the CCL on the 9th of July.

The one thing that I got from Wednesday night's game is that I really, really wish that Hamilton had decided to stay. It kills me that we trained him for two years and LSU is going to end up with a good player.

Hamilton is the type of player that I hope we won't lose under the new coach. Lets see what the new kids can handle!

Would be nice if he was able to step up and fill the Boozer role. I'm still so bummed whenever I think about Boozer being gone.

But yeah, looking forward to seeing what Bubu can do. Always like to see the local kids do well!

I hope so. He's already lost 2 guys, but you can't completely blame him for that.

Depends if anyone can teach him any aggressiveness. Until then, he's plateaued. I absolutely hated watching him do anything aside from shoot.

FWIW, the second session of classes started on June 14.

He had some decent garbage point and rebounds but I would sit there and think, why not shove Cole Aldrich, pick a little fight with him, get a technical. I always wanted him to get a little more firey.
