US World Cup Roster for 2014

What will this roster look like? Here is the list of players from this past world cup and their ages. Who could/should we replace or who could we add to the 2014 team to advance past the round of 16 stage?

Name Age for 2010 Age for 2014 Position
    Tim Howard 31 35 Goalkeeper
    Jonathan Spector 24 28 Defender
    Carlos Bocanegra 31 35 Defender
    Michael Bradley 23 27 Midfielder
    Oguchi Onyewu 28 32 Defender
    Steve Cherundulo 31 35 Defender
    Damarcus Beasley 28 32 Midfielder
    Clint Dempsey 27 31 Midfielder
    Herculez Gomez 28 32 Forward
    Landon DOnovan 28 32 Midfielder
    Stuart Holden 25 29 Midfielder
    JOnathan Bornstein 26 30 Defender
    Ricardo Clark 27 31 Midfielder
    Edson Buddle 29 33 Forward
    Jay Demerit 31 35 Defender
    Jose Torres 23 27 Midfielder
    Jozy Altidore 21 25 Forward
    Brad Guzan 26 30 Goalkeeper
    Maurice Edu 24 28 Midfielder
    Robbie Findley 25 29 Forward
    Clarence Goodson 28 32 Defender
    Benny Feilhaber 25 29 Midfielder
    Marcus Hahnemann 38 42 Goalkeeper

Some people that may get added to the 2014 team may be Freddy Adu, Charlie Davies, and anyone else that I do not know. What does everyone else think? I do not see Bocanegra, Cherundalo, Demeritt, or the really old Goalkeeper to be on the 2014 team.

Should be solid still with Howard in goal and in the midfield. Jozy and Charlie should be in the prime of their careers, but if not we need better options at striker. Definitely need some new faces in the defense.

If he does that means we won't be any better.

They really need a speed upgrade in the defense. Ghana just ran right past our guys several times. With the offsides rules the way they are you have to have someone that can run with anyone.

Apparently you have no regard for the mods have to say when they warned people like you to stay the hell out of these threads if you have nothing worthwhile to contribute...

Re: US World Cup Roster for 2014

2014 won't be any different than any other world cup if the U.S. soccer federation continues doing things the way they have been well forever. I'm not talking Manager moves, roster updates. I'm talking a massive overhaul that needs to do something to get kids in the inner-city playing soccer for the first time. The NBA, NFL and other sports leagues take advantage of the lower class athlete, Soccer needs to as well.

Just go put soccer goals in the projects in LA, Chicago, New York. That would be a good spot to start. It only takes a handful kids to really make an impact.

Soccer is the sport for the low-income in other places in the world, here it's the opposite, it takes a lot of money to join top clubs, get in for try-outs and receive good coaching.

Come on U.S. soccer, get the ball rolling.

This may help with 2018 or 2022 but in 14.

I fully expect Davies to make the roster. I think Donovan has one more go around to be honest. He is playing the best soccer of his career. If he goes back to Everton he will only continue to improve.

Howard was solid, most of the goals given up he was left out to dry, minus the first Ghana goal. You just can't get beat near post. I think he will have one more in him.

I think Adu has a shot. I think most of the roster will stay the same. A lot of our guys are young. I expect the major changes to come in the backline, which for the most part in this tournament underachieved or simply did not play well enough to win.

yea i was looking longer than just four years from now. it would really take 15+ years at least to really reap the rewards if the U.S. did something like this.

Re: US World Cup Roster for 2014

I think an inner city program would be great. Soccer is already the most played sport by the youth of the States. But it is mostly a country club sport it seems. There are plenty of great athletes who never get the shot. This may be because of the traveling and the expenses of club teams, which most cannot afford. Either way, we need to do something.

It was awesome to get out of the group and win the group but we had a wonderful opportunity yesterday and gave it away...
