    Leonard Johnson

I have always been a fan after his, after his freshman year, his aggressiveness as freshman cost us some yards in penalties, but to me it proved he wanted to play. I believe he is a 2 year starter now. Is he being challenged by talent this year? Or does his experience get him the start? I just hardly ever hear his name mentioned, all I hear is how our defense needs to improve a lot, or implications that our defense isn't very good.

LJ was a lot better last year and teams were not throwing at him. I expect even more out of him this year with an outstanding DB coach to guide him. Also, he has been less spectacular , but more sound in his tackling. The results are better if not as flashy.

I am not a student of the game like I used to be. Your analysis was my exact assumption.

Talked to my friends on campus and he has a class with LJ, he said his skills have vastly improved since Hobbs has taken him under his wing, I think CW has noted that Hobbs is mentoring LJ.

LJ is going to to great things this year. Very talented, multi-skilled individual. But most importantly, he's smart and willing to work hard to be at the top.

I think were all excited to see him play this season!

Good to hear Ellis has helped LJ improve his class skills.

I love that he became a good cover corner the second half of last year ... AND that he can always lay the wood.

    Re: Leonard Johnson

IIRC, LJ was stated as saying in an interview that he sort of "rededicated" himself to football and his position. That he relyed mostly on his natural athletic ability but now wants to become a more complete player and team leader. I get the fealing that we will see alot more from him this season. I don't know, he just sounded like he was going to be more focused and was going to bring it each and every play.

Good to hear guys. Something makes me think that winning that bowl game makes these guys even hungrier.

If you see him in person, you'll notice he's quite a bit bigger this summer.

It's normally not a good thing when you're hearing a defensive back's name a lot. Think Kennard Banks.

He was trash. His demeanor on the field was crap, and it was unbelievable how many times he wasn't even set at the snap.

I feel good about Simms too. Between he and Leonard we have a couple of big hitters that can intimidate.

    Re: Leonard Johnson

We should have a pretty solid defensive backfield. Banks was our one major liability on every play last year, and this year he's gone. Everyone else is one year smarter and one year stronger. All of our defensive struggles this year will be due to growing pains on the defensive line. I'm cautiously optimistic about our linebackers since they got some good experience last year and appear to be more athletic than the guys they're replacing. Hopefully LJ, Benton, Sims and crew can get us a few coverage sacks.
