Big 10 may not be looking at going any bigger than 12

In the hours and days after Nebraska was added as the 12th team in the Big Ten and then, later, the Big 12 survived an attempted Pac-10 coup, it was assumed that the expansion apocalypse had been staved off and there would be no further conference realignment.

Still, rumors persisted that the Big 12 would get back to a 12-team league, that the Big Ten was still looking at adding at least two or possibly four more teams. Based on at least one report, the latter is not likely to happen anytime in the near future.

    If at all.

Citing sources directly involved in expansion talks, Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune reports that it's expected the Big Ten will remain at 12 teams. League presidents, the sources told the Tribune, have little or no appetite to get to 14 or 16 schools.

Of course, if Notre Dame changed their independent tune and decided they wanted to join their Midwest conference brethren at the dinner table? We're guessing the conference presidents would suddenly start feeling pangs of hunger and have a strong desire to see what's on the menu.

Something major is going to have to happen to make ND "change their independent tune", like a playoff maybe. Otherwise why would they need to join a conference now that they avoided the superconference scare, and they still make tons of maney off of NBC.

I wonder if the threats of taking away their "non-profit" status may have played a role here.
