Italy go crashing out of the World Cup

First France, then Italy. First time in 36 years that Italy has not made it past the group stages of the WC. Slovakia beat them 3-2 in a frantic finish. In my opinion, this says a lot about the progress of the rest of the world in football. The perennial powers are no longer quite as dominant as they once were. So long Cannavaro, so long Marcello Lippi.

I definitely laughed. Stupid divers deserve what was coming to them.

Also, I wonder what Giuseppe Rossi is thinking... could have started for the US, wanted a better chance to win the WC with Italy.

We all know which country is moving on.

At least they should stop playing the Connavaro-based Nike commercial. That lounge-singer is almost as annoying as the vuvuzella.

The New Zealand minor league group is a big story also. They have just one low level pick me up team playing in Australia League and yet they managed to qualify when Austrailia qualified through Asian region.

This is like the an Independent League or Rookie League team competing in the major leagues. Just Wow for a country of 3M.

zing! this is good though. flopping is out, and one of the teams that loves to win 1-0 is gone. World Cup may be more watchable for the casual fan now.

Re: Italy go crashing out of the World Cup

so glad to see Italy and France out. Love, love, love soccer but can do without the constant whining and crying.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

I don't know what it is about the French that just makes me despise them. I was glad they were sent packing and to see their team breaking apart. Their World Cup meltdown was fantastic. Sidenote... I don't know if their coach has been replaced yet but that guy is a sore loser. Who refuses to shake the hand of the opposing coach? The French are first class all the way.

I thought it was funny when showing highlights of a match, Alexis Lalas said after an Italian player gave an Oscar performance something to the effect of, "they are taught at a young age at the slightest contact to go down like a sack of bricks."

IIRC, he didn't even make the WC roster for Italy.

Re: Italy go crashing out of the World Cup

Being half Italian, I think this sucks. Then again, anybody that actually thought that Italy had any chance of winning the World Cup this year didn't realize that Italy was one of the oldest (not to be confused with "most experienced") squads and was not playing well heading into the World Cup. Basically, anyone who picked Italy to win the World Cup did so for the same reasons why Lou Holtz picks Notre Dame to go 10-2 and make a BCS appearance every season - name recognition and homerism.

That, and their outright flopping is straight up offensive to me. I may have wanted Italy to succeed in this World Cup, but they got what they deserved this time around.
