That sucks, Saturn made some nice cars... Glad I didn't buy one though when I went car shopping a few months back.

The former GM they interviewed in the article is a good friend of mine. I feel terrible for him he's been with them for a long time.

Re: Saturn of Des Moines Closing Today

Saturn did a lot of things right but failed because of GM management. At one time 70% of their buyers were coming from imports.

Dated Products=The cars they put out were pretty decent overall but they didn't update them enough.

Pricing=The pay for sticker thing will work when you have a hot product but during a down economy you have to have the ability to change prices to compete. This is especially true when you have dated models.

The Saturn" experience=This is what they did right even better than the imports. The made a big deal over you buying a $20K car. You get treated better buying a $20K Saturn than a $100K car from BMW, Mercedes, etc.

GM=Saturn ended up just rebranding a lot of their cars so there was very little difference between a Chevy, Pontiac, and a Saturn.

Bought my Saturn from these guys back in '08. Great experience. Too bad.

Re: Saturn of Des Moines Closing Today

This sucks, but it was probably inevitable. My wife and I always enjoyed doing business with Saturn here in town. A lot of good people worked there, and Joe was a great guy.

In the article, it sounds like Ron Brown believes he can just absorb the old Saturn customers. We've bought several cars from Saturn and a couple from Bob Brown, and for us the difference in customer service was dramatic. Sort of like comparing a pat on the back to a kick in the butt. If we get stuck with Chevy to keep getting the GM discount (don't care for Buick), I don't think we'll be going to his place.

My '98 Saturn SL2 is a tank. I hope it lasts for a few more years.

I made an appointment a couple days in advance at BB Chevy to test drive an Avalanche and did. Got done, liked it, and said let's go work out the details. 2/3rd's thru that process another salesman came into the office I was in and asked if we were the ones that were test driving it because he just sold it. He was like a gloating school girl. The guy I was working with, was like "oh well" and made no efforts to try and take care of me or get me in a similar avalanche or give me a deal on another vehicle.
