    Today's "ISU Disrespect" Thread

    From CW's 6-21 Cyclone/Big 12 Links:

National writer: Texas made 'a cowardly move' by staying in Big 12 | Sports News | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News

"I know thereís nobody in the state of Texas saying, 'Oh boy, I canít wait to go up to Ames, Iowa and go into that lovely Iowa State campus when I got an opportunity to go to Stanford, to Berkeley, to UCLA, to California.' Are you kidding me?"

I won't argue against the main point. You could make the West coast-Midwest comparison and leave it at that. But no, he has to take it two steps further, specifically singling out ISU and taking a sarcastic swipe in the process.

I know, no big deal. It just rubs me the wrong way.

Man, if that guy had ever set foot on ISU's campus, he wouldn't have written that. I don't know why everyone assumes Ames and ISU's campus are such dumps when they really aren't. Ames isn't anything great, but the campus is awesome.

Yeah, the national pub is ridiculous, and part of what is fueling such a bad reputation for ISU.

Apparently the idiot did not check his facts, as ISU is one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation.

I would ignore this article. Not worth the time. If you feel strongly about it though...by all means call him out on it.

My question: Since when do the athletes actually set foot on the campus they are competing at?

Unless it's Hawaii, and the athletes go to the beach to observe a class: "Architecture 101: How to make a Sandcastle"

    Re: Today's "ISU Disrespect" Thread

FWIW, the guy is getting reamed by UT fans as well in his comments. No one is appreciating this article...not a single positive comment. It is junk, and probably never should have been on the link list. Kind of like the Dallas Keeler (but I do give him credit for the article that singled out the "Iowa" fans rooting for our conference demise).

It is a beautiful campus. Now, in Late November, I can see his point.

exactly... regular season games are not bowl games.. they players arent hanging out all week... so stupid... they fly in, go to hotel, wake up, play game, go home... seriously, weather, and length of flight are the only reasons one would not want to go somewhere during reg season.

At the end of the article he lost any credibility by calling Colorado one of the best programs in the Big 12. He is living in the last decade if he thinks that.

    Re: Today's "ISU Disrespect" Thread

Yeah, I noticed after reading all the links during the realignment process that ISU and Ames was used extensively as a punching bag. It got irritating as well as frustrating rather quickly.

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I do think he may have been discussing it from a fan perspective, more so than the players, so that part didn't necessarily bother me (although I'm not sure how many fans would attend those away games).

Even so, he shot his argument in the foot by referring specifically to one school. If ISU's lovely campus is so awful, UT has to go there only once every two years. Wah.

Correct. ISU's campus is anything but a dump. ISU's central campus was selected by the American Society of Landscape Architects as a "medallion" site. Only 3 central campuses in the nation received that honor. Yale University, the University of Virginia and Iowa State.

Mac Brown even said in his recent interviews about a reason to stay in the Big12 was so the UT fans can keep on travelling well to the road games...........Mac must know a different set of fans than the writer.

    Re: Today's "ISU Disrespect" Thread

    Dear Clay,

My name is David Riegner and I'm a senior at Iowa State University. I've spent the last three and a half years falling in love with Iowa State. The people, atmosphere and campus make Iowa State a special place.

We understand that we don't exactly boost the Big 12's athletic prominence, but to assert that the lack of respect is due to a dumpy campus (As you did in your piece "Deep in the heart of Texas lies a coward.") is absurd.

National writer: Texas made 'a cowardly move' by staying in Big 12 | Texas Longhorns News | Sports News | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News

Iowa State is well-known for being a beautiful campus surrounded with trees, a lake, and a beautiful, open "central campus."

The lack of respect for ISU stems from athletics only, and the sooner you and dozens of other bloggers realize this, the sooner we can improve our image.

The lack of factual representation is only placing our institution in a deeper hole. Iowa State is an excellent academic institution and a beautiful place to live. Ames may not be a "hub of night-life activity," but it is one of America's most livable cities. Can you say the same about Lubbock and College Station?

This, of course, ignores that fact that Ames is about 800 miles closer than Berkeley, California and more than 1000 miles closer than anything in Oregon and Washington.

I'm not asking for pity, or even an apology, but as someone who spends time around aspiring journalists, I think you should do a little (read: ANY) research before you slam a group of people already sensitized to this conference situation.

We get it. We sucked at sports for like....a century, but if you want a nice campus? We got that. You want a degree in engineering? We got that too. Want a degree in agricultural business? Got it.

Sports? Not so much, but we're trying to improve.

We're in a hole, and we want to get out of it. But we aren't in sole control of our destiny as long as bloggers and writers, like you, misrepresent our strengths, and manipulate our image to suit the point you're trying to make.

I look forward to hearing back from you soon,

    David Riegner
    Senior
    Materials Engineering
    Iowa State University
