    State money for athletics

Are we still using state money for athletics? I thought I read somewhere we were off of it now.

    Re: State money for athletics

The last I saw of it is that we are using 1.6 million of state funding and that we are still on our way to using no funds in the next couple of years.

IIRC, only about seven of the 300 some D1 programs in the country are completely self sufficient. UI is one of those, prob because of the BTN, which is partially why this is suddenly an issue.

And the new Big 12 deal should help out drastically in this regard.

you didn't hear pollard say that we were receiving $1.6MM from the state and that Iowa was receiving $0 from the state, but yet they were still 'subsidized'? a low point for Jamie Pollard.

They get money from everyone in the state who gets the Big 10 network, that was Pollard's point.

I think the number of self-sufficient ADs is a little higher than seven. But there are only about 120 DI FB programs...and the only way you are going to be able to be self-sufficient is with a strong FB revenue base.

When you look at the list of schools that are self-sufficient it is typically schools that regularly fill their 100,000 seat (or so) stadium...I know LSU and Ohio State are for sure...I think Florida and Tennessee are as well. LSU's AD actually gives money to the educational side of the house every year.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Last year we recieved $1.6 million in state funds - more importantly, that number is $450,000 less than the year before. If this stays the trend we will be off the dole in the next few years.

Only a small portion of the D-1 schools break even. Few athletics programs in black; most need aid - USATODAY.com - interesting article on the issue.

Even in Austin Iowa gets some part of my cable bill - BTN is on Time Warner and AT&T Uverse here...

    Frankly, I don't care what's on cable in Iowa...I don't live there.

I have no problem with the Big 10 Network...I'm just happy I don't have to pay for it or have it on my cable package because I really don't care to watch crappy FB and MBB.

I'm curious what your visionary leadership is doing about the population center of the country shifting southward? You better enjoy these last few years on top of the conference heap because the SEC is fixin' (a little SEC lingo for you) to take over as the top conference.

I don't like paying for something that I don't use. This is why I would like buy my TV channels ala-cart, I just want to pay for what I watch.

I think the SEC is already the top conference and with the shifting population base they will remain the top conference. Right now the SEC, Big10 and PAC10 are the most stable conferences and the SEC is the best FB conference.

For TV I get over the air TV (free), Clone Zone ($7/month), and cable TV shows streamed over the Nintendo Wii via Netflix ($12/month) - all the TV and sports a person needs. I'll pass on Big 10 network and other overpriced garbage TV shows. And if there is a different sporting event I want to watch that's on ESPN, I just go to the bar and hang w/ my "Buds".

The SEC won't take over in basketball. They already have in football so I'm not sure what you're getting at there.

It's all snark from here on out
