Self Sees Brackins As Versatile Scorer In NBA

Bill Self discusses Brackins and ISU.

Self Sees Brackins As Versatile Scorer In NBA - Jon Rothstein - MSG.com

It took all of one question for Kansas coach Bill Self to laugh when he thought of Iowa State power forward Craig Brackins.

"We held him to 42," Self joked when recalling a game between the Jayhawks and Cyclones in January 2009. "Craig can really score both inside and out. He's got a full offfensive repertoire and that will be obvious right away at the NBA level."

The 6-foot-10 Brackins has been linked to the Knicks through several media reports with one of their second-round picks in next week's NBA Draft. New York will select at both 38 and 39.

Though his team never went deep into the postseason during his college career, Brackins had a knack for always making an impact in the boxscore. As a sophomore, Brackins averaged 20.2 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game. Last season, his numbers dipped to 16.5 PPG and 8.5 RPG.

His lack of a supporting cast was a major reason for his team's failure to go further than they did.

"He didn't have a lot of help," Self said of Brackins. "That had a lot to do with why their (Iowa State) record was what it was."

Self also pointed out that Brackins would have to adapt to certain things on the interior if he hopes to have a long career on someone's NBA frontline.

"He's not a physical player," Self added. "He can develop into a Robert Horry type shooter if he develops on the perimeter. He has that type of ability. He's going to be someone who can face up and score in a number of different ways."
Personally, I think there's no chance of Craig falling beyond the Knicks back-to-back 2nd rounders (#38 & #39) as they absolutely love him. Best case is probably for him to go mid-20s 1st round.

Maybe Craig likes the idea of playing/living in New York, but I hope for his sake he doesn't go to the Knicks. He's had to put up with enough losing. He deserves to play for a winner.

He measured and played way to well at the combine. He is as tall and long as expected, a far better athlete, and one of the three most polished offensive big men in this draft. He will be a first rounder. I am thinking OKC, which would be great for him,as I think they have a legit shot to get to the finals next year. They gave the Lakers all they could handle.

Re: Self Sees Brackins As Versatile Scorer In NBA

I really think CB can stick in the league. Interesting that Self compared him to Big Shot Bob. Horry was an above average defender who had intangibles coming out of his ***. I don't think CB will ever be the defender Horry was, mainly because Horry could lock down 3's and 4's, but it is interesting.

I really see CB as a cross between guys like Horry, Battier, Rasheed Wallace and Channing Frye.

I really hope he gets somewhere better than that too.

He'll put numbers in D'Antoni's system.

Re: Self Sees Brackins As Versatile Scorer In NBA

Very interesting comments from Bill Self.

With those comments you get a window into why he has been so ultra-successful as a HC at every place he has coached...he knows talent when he sees it and more importantly can specifically target a person's strengths and weaknesses and then try to play to the strengths.

Self sees a Robert Horry type while our prior coach (and many of you) wanted to shove this round peg into a square hole by trying to make him into an exclusive back-to-the-basket post player.

I think Brackins is going to have a very solid NBA career and I am really going to be cheering for him all the way because he is a quality guy and he is a loyal Cyclone.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

This may be a reach but can anyone else see CB becoming a poor mans Danny Granger? They have the same build and both have solid shooting touch, Granger may handle the ball a bit better. And depending on what the Knicks can pull in free agency over the summer CB could get drafted into a whole different team than the terrible 09-10 squad

Self is talking about his NBA career rather than his college career. He was more effective in college as a post player than on the perimeter (if he ever learned or was taught to shot fake he would've been better around the basket though). If anything Mcdermott let him spend too much time around the arc, launching off balance 18-footers last season.

I have no idea what you were watching, but I didn't see the fans or the coach try to make Brackins an exclusive back-to-the-basket post player.

Agree ice, I was in fact frustrated that we ran so many iso's for him from at least 15 ft out. Very frustrating.

I agree with the aldridge comparisons but he may still need to add some weight to get there

"Freddie knows the game," Bird said. "I'm sure he picked up a lot of stuff over the years from different people. College is different from the NBA, but I'm sure he'll do a great job."

Please tell me his 3-point percentage. He scored almost at will in the post last year when he decided not to settle for jumpers. Also point to the time when he was ever "forced" to play with his back to the basket.

    Or so I have read.

We were an even worse team than I thought if we had someone who "scored almost at will in the post" and still pulled out a 15-17 record.
